I haven't posted a review for some time but here are some quickies.
Transformers 2 -
A film that a crap load of people have seen and the vast majority ended up taking a severe disliking to. It is really that bad? Yes and no, I think it depends on what you're expecting. Having enjoyed most of the first film except for the crappy 'humour' they put into it, I was expecting more of the same which I think allowed me to ignore some of the humour as it was less jarring (though you shouldn't have to ignore a large part of the film). The action scenes are pretty good and the effects are fantastic which in the end is what you go to see Transformers for. The story isn't particularly good but I guess if you want good story, go and see Public Enemies. Not a film about giant robots fighting!
5/10 Because robots fighting is always fun
Terminator Salvation -
Terminator 3 doesn't exist.... is that understood? It never happened, what was I talking about again? So the new Terminator film has arrived and to distance itself from the previous films, McG the new director sets it in the future. Which is what we have been waiting for, for years! The film is more the story of Marcus Wright than of John Connor which is a good and bad thing. Good in that it is a different view point but bad in that John Connor isn't really given much to do besides brood, shout and occasionally shoot things. It's a fairly sedate film when compared with T2 but it is fairly good. There are problems with it, the story could have been a little more fleshed out and some of the characters better used. I think the real problem is, that it lacks James Camerons flash and pizazz and that is something that really made the first two films better than a standard cyborg sci-fi movie.
However I did quite enjoy the film, except that Danny Elfman decided he couldn't leave the Terminator theme alone he had to change it. Don't fuck with good music Elfman, just because everyone is sick of your recycled music doesn't mean you can screw with the good stuff!
7/10 for the film .... 2/10 for the music (BAD ELFMAN BAD)
Public Enemies -
The Michael Mann - John Dillinger story aka the 1930s Heat as some are calling it. They can call it that but it isn't quite the same and it isn't as good truth be told. It's a beautifully shot, well acted, brilliantly constructed film but it doesn't have that spark to make it a great film. Heat has that spark, it just sets itself above alot of other Heist films. There are flashes of greatness in Public Enemies but it doesn't remain consistent. One of the interesting aspects of the film is that Michael Mann has opted for a documentary style of camera work during the action scenes (it's very popular at the mo, don't you know). This adds a certain newscast style to the scenes but it can be a little distracting when compared with the rest of the digitally shot movie. The gun battles are blazing as they should be in a gangster film and in the end there is little to fault, it just lacks that added magic.
