Well - I've seen it now and I have to say I was disappointed.
Hellboy is one of my favourite comics and Del Toro is one of my favourite directors. I really liked the first one and I love the animated films.
However...while it looked fantastic and the creature design was great - I thought the style of comedy was too slapstick, it lost a lot of the darkness because the concerns of the plot were so mundane, and what happened to Johan was awful!
It had a touch of the "Ghostbusters 2, better make it a bit more kid-friendly" to it, I thought.
Still looking forward to him doing The Hobbit. though. _________________
I would agree with you on all those points. Walked out of the cinema feeling very disappointed. All the characters became parodies of themselves which ruined a lot of it for me. And Mr AirBag switching sides effectively was completely out of character when compared to the rest of his screen time. _________________ Pro Massacre Boy!
Only just saw it, and have to say it was very very pretty. Except for young Hellboy, that just looked wrong on too many levels. His face didn't even move when he talked! Gotta agree with you Reaper, Gasbag switching sides was totally unpredictable, and didn't really feel right. I thought first half was pretty crappy, second half wasn't too shabby, but that may just have been because it was very very pretty. It had to be pretty, I suppose, with a name like 'The Golden Army.' Clue's in the title. Third half was awesome. Wait, what?
