Woo, its the 1st of July, which means, as of 2 hours ago, smoking in indoor public places is now against the law.
So what do we think?
Yay or Nay?

A thought: Does this mean Manny can't smoke upstairs anymore?

Ah, you beat me to it!

I would say a tentative 'yay', I think; but I do wonder where the smoking ban will go next.

Well, as a non-smoker, I agree with the ban in restaurants. There's nothing worse than sitting in a restaurant, dining upon a fined grilled steak, when the bugger next to you lights up and breathes all over you. Been there, done that. So I can enjoy restaurants now although I'm used to smokers in pubs so I can't say it bothers me that much.

As for in the workplace, I wholeheartedly agree - if only to stop the fag-hags at work dicking off every hour for a 5 minute fag break and then still working the same hours as we non-smokers!

As for Manny smoking upstairs, I guess he can't smoke upstairs anymore now. Unless he officially declares his shop an embassy, thereby making it exempt from the Law (a pub somewhere in the UK has done exactly that).

I think it's excellent all round.

Bums to the 'it's eroding our freedom' crew - I want the freedom to not get cancer because of you.

You want to die? Do it at home away from non-smokers.

I'd agree with the bums to the freedom crew. There are always things we aren't allowed to do in public, last time I checked its still illegal to go naked or have sex in public and very few people if any really openly complain about that. Its essentially the same thing.

I'm glad they've put the ban on, it'll be a nice change to go the pub and not come out smelling like an ashtray.

What country is this pub and embassy for?

1st let me say that i am not totally against the ban, let met explain, i don't think it makes much difference to me, or to my kids, but in the long term it may make a difference to my children's children, who wont take up the habit because they will see it as unsociable, why, they will ask would i wont to smoke, i cant go anywhere if i do, so no thank you.

I always used to say as a smoker that if its that bad, why not Ban it, no they wont do that, they like the revenue.
but the first step has been taken, and for that i take my hat off, (money where the mouth is) it would seem that human life is worth more than profit.
as for an all out ban, don't be stupid, that would open the floodgates to the black market, these thing take time.

however having said that, its interesting to see how different countries interpret the law in different ways, this being a European objective and not just British.

some countries are adopting a whole different approach,
now Waffle likes to drink in a non smoking bar.
me i like a smoking bar.
whose right?
both of us.
and thats where freedom of choice comes in.
Now in certain countries, in Europe, where the authorities have determined that as establishment you have the right to be a smoking or a nonsmoking venue
providing that no persons under the age of 18 are allowed, (smoking only)and that you place a clear sigh at the front of the premises that you are smokeing or nonsmoking.

But the sale of tobacco has been restricted, you no longer can buy fags (sorry you Yanks) Laughing at a Supermarket, at a petrol station, at a vending machine or a news agent.

you can only buy the from licenced tobacconist, which have very tight controls

you see, are cigarettes the problem, or its it the availability which is the problem

Never the less, it would seem that England has taken up the gauntlet, so much so that the employment of Trading Standard officers have more than quadrupled in the last six months, could this be a cash cow, well maybe, did you know that a police officer wont arrest you for smoking?
its an offense, only if its a council representative, who has the correct licence to nick you... bit like a traffic warden, ...
I F**KING HATE TRAFFIC WARDENS!!!!!

Well written post Manny, some good points in there. I wouldn't be against them having smoking bars and non smoking bars in theory but I don't know if it would actually work. Say you have your standard group of friends some smoke some don't, one half of the group want to go to the smoking bar, the rest don't.

You will have three outcomes, they split half and half, everyone goes to the smoking bar or everyone goes to the non smoking bar. As its more likely that the last two will be the choice in the end you're either going to get a similar situation as it was before the smoking ban or to how the situation is now. Plus as soon as all the pubs around here know you can make it a smoking bar, they'll all do it so nothing will have changed.

Could be worth a shot though

I think that people are finally getting wise, and that numbers will steadily drop. It'll take a while, but this could potentially be the end of smoking, and that can only be a good thing.

Or maybe I'm just being naive and idealistic Confused
