And as the Watchmen draws ever closer, only days now, we must have seen all sorts of television transmitted trailers, mmmm TTT's sounds like a disease, sorry where was i.
Oh yeah, Watchmen Movie, are we ready? and did anyone see Jonathan Ross's review on Film 2009?
So.
Watchmen. Skip to the end... I loved it.
Thats literally all I have to say.
Its public knowledge that they changed the end (no giant vagina-faced Squid), but I thought it worked very well.
Its amazing, and you should all not be on your computers right now, and go and watch it.
Go on.
.....Are you still here? Watch it! _________________ Let There Be Lightning
Of course it is not "the comic on the screen" - but as adaptations go I'd put it up with Lord Of The Rings. Od course certain things were taken out / changed but that was going to happen.
I think it does what the best adaptations do - capture the essence and main plot beats of the original and translate them to another medium.
I don't know where these points are supposed to be in the film where it "drags on" I didn't feel that at all.
It looks spectacular and the soundtrack is spot on.
High Points:
The Comedian was perfect
The opening credits - wow (I know that sounds strange but you will see what I mean)
Dr Manhattan in Vietnam
Cutting back on the "having Dr Manhattan on Mars doing the Dr Exposition bit" and showing it instead worked better for me as I always (shhh) found that issue a bit boring.
I want a real Bubastis!
The sex scene was cheesily perfect.
No real "low" points but:
Rorshach's journal doesn't really work as voiceover, but it was not written to be spoken. Also he doesn't come across as so uncompromising as he does in the book, but I am not sure why.
I wished Rorshach's mask had been shiny not fabricy.
The fighting scenes are much "bigger" than in the comic - but I think they needed it to get over the same feel/impact on a big screen in 2009.
Would have liked to keep more of the ending of the book beyond just the "squid thing" about how the aftermath is resolved, and Jon "skipping" in time as he is confused by the tachyons - but they are minor gripes.
Re the ending:
Given I don't buy the premise of the original plan - that a common enemy will draw the world together (people are as likely to worship it, try to collaborate with it, use the opportunity to get one in on distracted enemies etc as all decide to team up on it) it didn't make much difference to the overall story - other than I think without the telepathy to convince them otherwise the US and the USSR would still have launched the missiles.
However I think the ending of the book was better. _________________

I love Saturday Morning Rorschach cuddling puppies and being so funny. Pure genius.
In other Watchmen news:
Watchmen topped the US box office at the weekend, with an estimated $55.7 million take. Depending upon where you read the article, this is both an excellent achievement and also a catastrophic disaster (I think it depends on whether or not the relevant publication is supposed to like Watchmen).
There are some items of interest here to take note of. Firstly, Watchmen is the 12th highest opening of all time for a comic book movie, the 6th highest opening for an R-rated (US) movie and the 2nd highest opening for any DC Comics property (behind only The Dark Knight - surprise, surprise).
All of this sounds really good until you realise Watchmen isn't going to break even with its cinema release and will likely not do so until its eventual DVD sales. Y'see, even though Watchmen was reportedly made for $120 million, it will likely need a figure north of $400 million to break even, due to the number of organisations involved in the background (Warner Bros, Fox, Paramount & Legendary Pictures).
Still, just over a week from now, I'll form my own opinion.
Oh... and Cat...? You're not the only one who found the Dr Manhattan exposition slightly boring, just as I found Tales of the Black Freighter distracted me too heavily from the main story.
I'll say this next one really quietly... there seems to be an opinion that Watchmen and Frank Miller's The Dark Knight are the two leading examples of our medium, with Watchmen considered the better of the two. Personally, I prefer The Dark Knight; but only just. _________________ With Great Power, Comes Great... Potential to ROB BANKS!!! HAHAH! THAT'S HOW TO BEAT THE RECESSION!!!
