Yeah, Venom and Carnage have both been muddied over the years.

Things started to go wrong with Venom when they made him the Lethal Protector and turned him into more of an anti-hero. They then had Venom give birth to a number of children in a number of instantly forgettable storylines. After The Clone Saga, Marvel decided that Venom should be a villain again but then chose to remove the fact that Venom knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. This has apparently been undone and the symbiote now belongs to someone else (Mac Gargan).

I think the way to go with Venom now is for the symbiote to choose a completely new host, preferably one that has no prior connection to Peter Parker OR Spider-Man. We could then examine the symbiote's motivations for bonding with this person and also those of the host's. Would the host be a willing host...? Would he be completely compliant to the symbiote...? Would he try to kill or help Spidey...? In the meantime, have the symbiote itself kill Eddie Brock in a mercy killing.

Things started to go wrong with Carnage in only his second appearance: Maximum Carnage. A dire story arc that did nothing more than have Carnage fight Spider-Man and his 'Amazing Friends'.

With Carnage, simply place the symbiote back on Cletus Kasady (trying somehow to rectify that thing where The Sentry tore him in two in space) and have Carnage do what he does best: be a serial killer. The story could be told over the course of a year with a number of killings taking place within the Spider-books. No cause is clearly apparent although there is a possibility that all are related. After a year, tie the killings together, have the new Venom enter the fray and have all roads lead to a three-way confrontation between Spidey, Venom and Carnage.

Anyhoo... that's what I think.

I think that Venom worked best as he originally appeared - he knew who Peter was, it was almost a personal grudge, he couldn't be detected by the Spider sense, and had a twisted sense of honour. He could get close to Peter without Peter knowing it, and I thought that he was more of a threat than a lot of other spider villains.

Without the knowledge of who Peter is, Venom's just a bit of a slavering monster, although Civil War may have changed that....

That was something I was never clear on. How intelegent are the symbiants? Do they retain the knowledge of their previous hosts or is it a brand new monster every time it bonds with someone?

On a side point, Parker's unmasked now, so it doesn't matter if the host knew his identity before because he will now. Though it'd be a funny twist if Venom was the only one who'd missed the news that day.

I assumed the Symbiote was fairly intelligent and would keep the memories of it's previous hosts. Heh Venom is always the last to know, poor guy

The Symbiotes are pretty switched on, whever they keep their brains. Theres been a number of times where the hosts have been holding conversations with the symbiotes, especially in the Venom vs Carnage story, where Kassidy was chatting away with Carnage, and then in Toxin where... that guy was trying to teach Toxin responsibilites and stuff.

But yeah, Carnage was better when he was just a bloody crazy psyco, with powers.

I thought the Toxin min was a good atempt to do something a little different with the Symbiotes.
