Whatever Comics Awards 2008

The Whatever Comics Awards 2008

Time flies when you’re having fun, doesn’t it?

It doesn’t feel like an entire year has passed since we celebrated 2007’s finest; and now, we get to do it all over again for 2008 as we celebrate the year that was by honouring those who stood out ahead of all others in our comic book industry. Awards season will soon be upon us, and we here at Whatever Comics like to celebrate the year past before anyone else has the chance to do so.

This is our third consecutive annual Whatever Comics Awards and, before we proceed any further, I think it rather appropriate we take a moment to thank Manny and Debe for all their hard work over the last 12 months. It’s been a transitional year for the two of them as they moved premises within Canterbury and I’m sure you will all join me in thanking them for their efforts in making the transition as smooth as possible for their customers, despite the tremendous upheaval it likely caused them. So, to Manny and Debe, thank you so very much for all of your hard work and we all hope you continue to prosper in 2009.

And now, without further ado, let’s turn our attention to The Whatever Comics Awards 2008!

Votes may be cast in the following categories:

Best Writer

Best Artist

Best Ongoing Series

Best Limited Series (includes One-Shots)

Best Graphic Novel (does not include TPB’s)

Best Moment

Best Comic Book Related Movie

Worst of the Worst

Most Anticipated for 2009

Before any votes can be cast, we first need to nominate our choices for the Polls!

Please use this thread to cast your nominations - and this thread only. You may nominate three choices for each category, in place of first, second and third. After a week (although I may increase this to 10 days), the nominations thread will close and your entries counted. Your first placed nomination will score three points, your second two points and your third only the one point. The five highest scoring entries will then be put forward to the Polls where you then vote for your favourite.

Please use the categories above as your template (or, as you’ll see, with my own nominations immediately following). Please also keep your nominations to just the one post. We all have the facility to edit our own posts, so, if after a couple of days, you change your mind or, if you choose to nominate in only two or three categories to begin with before adding to more a few days later, please do so in your original nominations post. Please feel free to use the thread to debate, discuss and ridicule everybody else’s nominations (the ridiculing is particularly important); however, we will only count your nominations from your actual nominating post. This makes it a lot easier when counting your nominations later.

This time last year, the following were rewarded for their efforts in 2007:

Best Writer - Ed Brubaker

Best Artist - Bryan Hitch

Best Ongoing Series - New Avengers

Best Limited Series - Next Wave

Best Graphic Novel - League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier

Best Moment - Mina Murray kicking James Bond’s backside (Black Dossier)

Best Comic Book Related Movie - 300

Worst of the Worst - One More Day

Most Anticipated for 2008 - The Dark Knight Returns

I think there’s one here, out of all the above, that’s got a very strong chance of winning again, don’t you?

So, what made you dribble in delightfully orgasmic fan boy (or girl) ecstasy in 2008? What made you rage with all your geeky might? Did you punch the air with joy when Tony Stark fell from grace? Do you really believe Batman is dead? Were you frustrated when you discovered Batman RIP actually ends in Final Crisis 6? Did you stage your own Secret Invasion? Or did you merely start a Brand New Day? Did you kill your cat when Diamond raised their prices? There’s only one way to find out!

NOMINATE!!! (Hands up all those who thought I would say Fight!!!)

If you're a new forum member, an old forum member or even a forum member who's joined but rarely posts, this is your chance to have your say in what, in comics, stood out for you in 2008.
Robin The Boy Wonder

Sure, I could tell you I'm nominating my selections first so that you all have a template to work from... but I also wanted to nominate first for a change!!! Yes, this really is the only excitement I have in my life, so please bear with me... and offer Ann your sympathies, for it is she who has the unfortunate task of having to live with me!  Smile

In reply to Web of Fear's query concerning Best Moment...

In past years, we've usually nominated Best Moment as something that actually saw print in a comic. Undoubtedly, the disappearing pencil trick from The Dark Knight is a great moment; however, my gut feeling is that we keep it to a moment from the printed comic book page.

I think it could be cinema's greatest moment of 2008 though.

And Ultimates 3? Worst of the Worst? Infidel! I loved it!  Very Happy
Web of Fear

OK.  The pencil trick has been bumped to an honourable mention. Smile
Robin The Boy Wonder

Now where is everybody else...?

I would've thought Bats & Xeall would be flying for me by now after I nominted Amazing Spider-Man for Best Ongoing...

Firstly, I'm going to keep the nominations running a while longer. I'd like to thank everyone who has nominated so far; however, there are quite a few more who haven't come forward yet. It's not too surprising; it is a busy time of year after all (believe me, December & January are my two busiest at work).

Secondly:

CatFang I'm under the impression that Pride of Baghdad was released in 2007... unless there's a sequel I'm unaware of. It could be me there so I'd appreciate confirmation. If that is indeed the case, then I'm afraid I'm going to need a replacement nom from the remarkable Cat.

Reaper Isn't Watchmen a TPB?

And I know you don't mean that about Ultimates 3 really...  Wink

I'm sorry if I'm being a stickler but we need to keep the rules reasonably level... although I am wrestling with my conscience concerning the Graphic Novel category; there's a part of me that would love to accept TPB's too.
CatFang

Ah - sorry.

Mine says 2008 inside but maybe it is a second printing or something. I'll edit the post when I think of something else.

I've been reading a lot of old stuff recently so its quite hard!
Reaper

I'm there's an ethical question with putting a nomination in for your other half  Razz

Robin The Boy Wonder

OK, I need to close the nominations thread soon...

You have until end of play Sunday 18th January to either post or conclude your nominations. After that, this thread is dead.

And then let battle commence...  Very Happy

In other news...

Bats - We covered this one elsewhere, but Pride of Baghdad is ineligible for selection. The graphic novel was released in 2006 and, as far as I'm aware, subsequent re-prints haven't seen the addition of all-new material or have been updated in any significant manner (unlike The Killing Joke where all of the original art was re-coloured). Please let me know if I'm wrong; otherwise, unless you change your nominations, Stan Lee's Soapbox (which I think could be counted as it's both a TPB and a Graphic Novel all-in-one due to its presentation and all-new material) will take first place.
Robin The Boy Wonder

This thread is now officially closed.

I would like to thank everyone who took the time to post their nominations for the Whatever Comics Awards 2008.

At some stage over the next seven days, I'll be posting the Polls onto the website; however, please bear with me... in the middle of all that is my stag night...  Very Happy
