What Batmanuels been watching

We haven't had one of these for a while, so without further ado here we go, now although these films are not strictly comic book films they are animated so lets not split hairs.... or lips Smile

Spirited Away:
Oscar winning Japanese animated fantasy, 1994.
now i am not a great fan of anime, i was when Akira was first released and when i saw Laputa, but unfortunately with commercial success comes commercial excess.
This 1994 film shows what the medium can really do, and wins its Oscar with a deserved round of applause.
At no time during this movie are you left with nothing but a feeling of wonder, and strengthens my view that the japanese are indeed nuclear mutants, because, hell, no westerner could have seen this coming... Fantastic. catch it if you can!
9.5/10

Belleville Rendez-vous, Black Comerdy 2003.
This Belgian animated film could easily be confused with being French, never the less, it is an absolute gem, the animation is not only excellent, its strange, dark, light, surreal all wrapped into one, and if the Jap stuff is nuclear, then this is raw crude plutonium, pure and simple, it has very little dialogue, and the film relies on visuals and music to forward itself, the real beauty of this film is although the dialogue is thin to non existent, at no time do you find yourself not knowing what is happening, absolute genius. chase this one, don't let it get away.

now i haven't told you much about the story lines of these brilliant films, that in its self was intentional, if you ever get around to watching these films, judge for your self's, i am sure as hell not going to be a spoiler.
this gets a shinny 9.8 / 10.

as a matter of interest both films are doing the rounds on the less commercial BBC channels Smile

i have to admit to falling asleep during Spirited Away (was very tired) and belgian animation I've heard for years is fantastic.

Good work on the reviews, keep them coming  Very Happy

Spirited Away is fantastic. The character design, animation, story and characterisation are all brilliant. Wildly inventive.

Howl's Moving Castle is also worth a look. The artwork is on a par, although the story is not quite so satisfying.
Xeall

Howls moving castle does seem very good. Studio Gibli does produce some classics but also some utter shite. Problem with alot of anime fans is that they think if it makes no sense and has deep meaning that you can't understand, its great. No it means the thoughts and ideas do not translate to english in more ways than one. The cultural legends and so forth make sense to them, not us.

However anyone looking for something that bridged that gap in cultural difference find yourself a copy of okami on PS2. The game is a blatent rip on the zelda formula, but beat twilight princess in all awards that year
Robin The Boy Wonder

I see you went for something slightly more intellectual than Into The Blue.  Wink

Not that Into The Blue is a bad film. No plot. Poor acting. Jessica Alba in a bikini. I can think of many, many worse things to do with my two hours!  Wink

It's funny though you've done this... I watched Sunshine the other night and thought about doing the exact same thing!

Anyway, I've digressed; so back to topic!

Spirited Away. Heard a lot of good things about it but never really fancied it. What's the film about...?
waffle

Spirited Away is indeed fantastic - but it's a 2001 film, not 1994. Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things  Very Happy

Sometime great minds (although at times may seem a million miles apart) do think alike Wink
