They take place in different continuities. Theyare basically the same characters, but their origins and characters are slighty adjusted.
For example, Ultimate Wasp is a mutant. Regular Wasp gets her powers from Pym particles.

Whilst that is spot on a slightly better way to discribe it is as a reimagining of the Marvel Universe.
If the characters had been created today - with the same broad outline (Spider-man is still a teenage nerd bitten by a spider etc) how would they have been developed?
For example - why would a hardened killer like Wolverine want to join a band of pompus teenage mutants? Cos he wants to sleep with one of them!
If someone turned up on the street outside claiming to be Thor son of Odin and God of Thunder, would you believe him, or think "Look at the luny with the big hammer!"??
Same characters. Fresh ideas.
Also from a marketting point of view Marvel realised that some people were being put off from collecting comics due to the amount of back history they needed to catch up on. 50 odd years is quite a bit.
With the Ultimate U it's easy to get in to - so it's a good starting point for new readers

So when DC had a crisis, Marvel had a revelation.
Kinda relating to this, when did the term 616 first become standard with the real MarvelU. Who first started this, what comic???

I would recommend the first Ultimate X-Men and the first Ultimate Spider-Man. Both fantastic starts to the series. If you've not read the Ultimates then that is definitely worth a look.
Tbh I thought you had read some of this stuff already Waffle

I've read the first three Ultimates collections. loved them, and am just waiting for the fourth now.
but yeah, that's all I've read in terms of Ultimate stuff. is that bad?

Well all of the Ultimate stuff is good (I've got just about all of it, or read it at any rate) so it just depends on who you like really. You may not be that much of a fan of the FF, so maybe don't get UFF. But get USM if you like Spidey.

Its not a bad thing, just surprising I guess

No Rascal you couldn't be more wrong if you were caught wearing stockings and suspenders while sexually molesting your mothers corpse!!
The whole point of the Ultimate U is to set aside what you would expect from its MU counterpart and deliver something fresh.
I have never been a big FF fan but for ages Ultimate FF was one of my top three books a month. I really, really enjoyed it. It took a little while to get going, but boy am I glad i stuck with it.
It's not quite as good as it was now but its still better than alot of the rubbish that people buy.
Ultimate X-men seems to wax and wane with one arc being absolute genius and the next being a bit wet. Probably worth sticking with for the good stuff though.
And Ultimate Spider-man, although not totally my cup of tea, is the near perfect example of a teen angst superhero book. Bendis does write pretty good teenagers it must be said.
And as for why it's suprising.
The ultimate MU has delivered some of the consistantly best stories in recent years. It might be understandable that you missed them if you had ignored the universe as a whole (though you must have been living under a rock!) but to have tried one bit of it and ebnjoyed it and then not to have dipped your toe in the water esle where? Well, you deserve a slap!!!

Don't know exactly where it started - I believe it was referred to in an interview with a writter as thats how the marvel offices have reffered to it for a while.
However, Joe Q hates the term and is trying to stop its use. Not doing to well at the moment though it must be said!

From what i can tell it can't be stopped as 616 is used all the time in Exiles.
I read up on it and i believe it came from captain Britain [UK printing].
Whats wrong with the name, i quite like it, its kinda convenient for use.

Seems a weird thing to want to be ousted.

I think that "616" was an invention of Alan Moore when he was writing Captain Britain, and had some complex multi-reality storyline going on. I belive he came up with this as whenever these types of stories come up, the "main" reality is usually something like "Earth 1" and he wanted to get away from the cliche.

Yep That sounds about right.
Then it was kept in use around the Marvel offices until it just made its way back in to the books.
And upsets Joe Q.
What a damn shame!

Longshot is spot on.
My interpretation of Joe Quesada's dislike is that he finds the term somewhat redundant given that the different comic universes at Marvel are all clearly refined (Marvel Universe, Ultimate Universe etc) although there is nothing he can do about it as it's been used very often throughout mainstream Marvel continuity. It's just not his personal preference.

I would say it makes sense to use it because there are other alternate realities that get brought into the main series and by giving them all a number it makes its easier for us readers to keep up with which one is being used today

SO why cant't they give the age of apocoplype time kine a different number, what is the difference between tha tand the others.

Maybe because it's been called Age of Apocalypse Universe/Timeline so we dont need a number. Who knows
|
Robin The Boy Wonder

I'm sure some bright spark will give Age of Apocalypse a number someday.
Of course, the true Age of Apocalypse was within the 616 wasn't it...? Or, at least, that's my understanding.
Y'see, AOA began when Legion travelled back in time and murdered his father, Charles Xavier (I can't remember specifics, so please bear with me on this). Without Xavier, the flow of history dramatically altered with Apocalypse rising earlier than planned to conquer Earth.
Eventually, the timeline was restored with Xavier saved from death.
Which reminds me, if nothing else, that I should try to find the time to re-read this soon. I can't remember as much of it as I thought.

Theres also the recent additions they've made to it as well

Always the same, they should leave these thingsa alone

This is why comic book time travel should only ever be attempted with Booster Gold.
