True Believers #1
True Believers # 1 of 5
By Cary Bates & Paul Gulacy
I have just finished reading this and what a surprise it was, I knew nothing about this title except the blurb I must have read in the Marvel Previews which by now has been long forgotten.
So when it arrived I was just a little bit intrigued in much the same way that I was intrigued by 1985 but for completely different reasons.
Open it up and you are immediately assaulted by the strong visuals by Paul Gulacy, who is no stranger to the comic industry with credentials above and beyond, his best known work being Marvel’s Master of Kung Fu in the seventies.
The first half of the book shows us the True Believers infiltrating what is a sordid little underground affair involving abducted prostitutes, mutant growth hormone, LSD, an arena, and perverts dressed in Superhero costumes.
Intrigued? You should be as this first half Roller coasters its way to the eventual exposure on the TrueBelievers.com website.
The second half of the book is now taken up with repercussions of than mornings podcast where it is revealed that the what has now become known as Bikini fight club scandal lead by a sitting member of the U.S. Senate.
And with this, all roads lead to Shield, as with any group of rouge operators it is going to attract the attention of the worlds largest most powerful anti espionage organization.
Only problem in, Shield has already been compromised by the True Believers who are lead by shield agent mole Payback , and as the Director of Shield asks how on earth with all of Shields massive budget and resources they cant find out who is behind the website, it starts to become apparent just how clever the True Believers are.
And it also becomes apparent on the final page who the next big wig to be exposed is going to be.
All in all this is one of the best and most surprising comics I have read this year, if it can keep up this pace for the next four issues without falling flat or copping out, then we could be in for a treat
A very solid 9.8 / 10
