The Northern Lights

I'll start by saying that I'm not going to call it by its American name.
For those who don't know, the Northern Lights is the first of an absolutly fantastic trilogy of books, by Philip Pullman, called "His Dark Materials". Succeded by the Sutble Knife, and the Amber Spyglass, it follows a girl in the fist book, trying to recuse her friend, while being swept up in larger events, to which she plays a key role.
the trailer is here.

Obviously, its been dumbed down for the Yank audiences, starting with the name of the book and movie, and even the name of the key item, the Alethiometer.

All I can say is, that as usual, Hollywood have managed to change something that should have been an absolute winner, into the standard peice of crap, as is their way.
Xeall

have you seen it? My hopes for it were really high.

Either way with the films almost assured sucsess we should hopefully see the return of the stage play that i mentioned before. I suggest anyone who liked the books or likes the idea of them goes abd see's it. Fantastic recreation of the books. However you do have to make two trips as its in 2 parts dividing up the trilogy
Web of Fear

Obviously "The Golden Alethiometer" didn't have the right ring. Wink
CatFang

I am really looking forward to the film.

Even with the changes I have heard about (GRRR Evil or Very Mad ) the trailer looks great.

I was going to read the book again before the film came out, but as it is at my parent's house I guess that won't happen now. I read it several years ago now so I hope I can remember it.

Just my quick take re the changes - the church lobby in the US was never going to be happy whatever they did, so they might as well have left it all as it is supposed to be for the rest of us.

If you go to the film's website there is a quiz to find out who your daemon is. Mine is a Racoon named Pereus. Yay.
norsefire1

i think over the years, when it comes to being a version of a book/gn iam into i just try to enjoy it as a thing in its self, little point of trying to compare it to its source, after all nosferatu is not the book of dracula but both are awesome. thinking about it dracula is one of the best examples where the plot of the book is nothing like its filmed version but there are lots of good dracula movies which are good in there selfs not cos they have the plot of the book. thanks for the heads up on the quiz, was lots of fun, my daemon is named rhianna and she is ermine (stoat).
Xeall

ha i'll put this down for those who know me (did the quiz by the way)

'Modest, assertive, sociable, humble (!) and softly spoken'

HA HA HA

What an excellent point, Norsefire1!

I love Nosferatu and although I knew it was Dracula I'd sort of forgotten that as they are so distinct.

Have you seen Shadow of the Vampire? If not it's worth a look if you like Nosferatu.
The Rascal King

Aleone the Crow.
Modest, inquisitve, spontaneous, humble and assertive.
norsefire1

i have indeed seen shadow of the vampire, what an awesome movie, everything about that movie iam a huge malkovich fan anyway so i was sold on that alone but it is so complex so many things going on in it. if you ignore the twist in the plot, which is fun, for me its kind of like an great commentary on the whole context of the german expressionism.

Brienne the Snow Leopard

Apparently I'm Modest, fickle, Spontaneous, sociable and shy...

Hmmmm
CatFang

I forgot to post my characteristics - apparently I am Modest, a leader, assertive, spontaneous and competitive.

i'd like to see Nancy Colins Sunglasses After Dark made into a film, a good film that is, if not leave it alone...

From the trailer:
[/Stupid deep voiced guy]"Legend tells of the last Golden Compass. Whoever can read it, has the power to rule the universe. There are those who would use it for good, and those who seek it for evil."

ARGHHHHHH>  Mad
CatFang

Longshot

Who has actually seen this then???

I quite enjoyed it, Didnt like the messing that much, but as a Film in itself it was very cool.

The two big fights were awesome and I loved seeing the way people died.

What do you all actually think then???
Xeall

dvd renting for me on this one i don't want to take the risk
norsefire1

just seen this, the one thing that stands out is that its better then stardust. and the other thing is they missed out the end of the book Question (i guess to get the 2nd movie off to a flying start) with that said it is quite close to the book. good acting all round, with that said kidman did over do it a bit, what was good about the movie was the world of pullmans books came to life. all in all worth the viewing.

Somebody PLEASE tell me this is a horrible typo on IGN's behalf:

IGN wrote:
The other standout character is a mighty ice bear called Iorek Byrnison. Voiced by Sir Ian McKellen and brought to life with some wonderful computer generated effects, Iorek is a sumptuous sight to behold, and his ferocious face-off with fellow ice bear Rangan Sturlusson is undoubtedly the highlight of the film – a brutal battle between two enormous and deadly warriors that truly takes the breath away.

Rangan Sturlusson? Who the FUCK is Rangan Sturlusson?
Reaper

Do you actually want me to tell you... or would you rather find out in the cinema?
Xeall

i can't actually remember the other bears name...
CatFang

I have seen the film now and I did enjoy it.

It seemed to be over very quickly and I would have liked it to be longer so that it had time to go into some of the plot points more closely.

It's several years since I read the book, so I can't remember how closely it follows the plot.

I thought I remembered that there was a boy from our world who shared Lyra's adventures - or does he not come into it til later?

The daemons were done really well, I thought, and the part where Mrs Coulter's monkey has hold of Pan when she is arguing with Lyra was outstanding.

Now I want an armoured bear to ride across the snowy wastes.
Xeall

the boy came in in book two.

So, tell me....Did your mother feed you pot noodles while you were potty training?

There has to be some explanation for this obsession

Twisted Evil
Batmanuel

Trust me, Pot Noodles would have been a luxury, my mum was one if not the worst cook ever, if we were having something out of a tin it was Very Happy  and if mum was cooking its was Crying or Very sad
oh and that leather liver, how i don't miss it.
The Rascal King

Watched it online the other day (yarggh), and it was kack.
Batmanuel
