Fantastic Four #554
By Miller, Hitch & Neary
Marvel
I am going to start with a part taken from the interview with Mark Miller at the back of this issue as I feel that it is relevant.
Marvel Asks: You have said that this is a love letter to Stan & Jack, how much of the original 102 issue run has influenced your planned year?
Miller Replies: Enormously, that's why we wont be referring to them at all, Why? Because the lesson we have leaned from Lee & Kirby is to do comics your own way.
Which is exactly what you get with this issue!
But is The Fantastic Four By Miller Hitch & Neary any good? Well let's take a look and see.
The first thing that strikes you as you open the first page of the comic is the art. I have read a few Fantastic Fours of late and it's definitely shot up in quality a few notches since the last issue, that's for sure. But then it is Brian Hitch and it's what we have come to expect of him.
Story wise, the whole issue serves as a launching pad for the story to come, which isn't really revealed until the last page.
We get quickly reintroduced to the characters - remember this is a new take on an old team, so leave any preconceived ideas at home.
As they return from a little time trip excursion I noted that the scene could almost be taken straight from a Back to the Future film - shame on you both for such blatant plagiarism and on the first story page too!
We go on to see Johnny Storm becoming even more of a Media mongrel than Paris Hilton (Sue Storm's words not mine).
We learn that Mr Fantastic has an Ex. Yes, he did have a girl friend before Sue! We get to meet her here, and she's a bit, dare I say it, fantastic!
Sue herself is essentially going to work with her new team of She-Hulk and the Wasp, as a super human relief effort to help victims of super villain crime.
The Thing is, well. the Thing, although he does seem to be a lot more comfortable with his disfigurement than before. This is very evident in the dialogue. An example of this is when he asks Reed if there is "any chance of a favour for the guy you disfigured in that cosmic ray accident" and later he chats up a girl with lines like "I will tell you after breakfast".
I am sure that this run is going to end up being a bit special and is going to kick into gear big time with the next issue.
This issue was nothing more than an introduction which has laid the frame work for what's coming. But I found myself thinking get on with it and by the time it did get on with it, it was the end of the comic! So for that reason and that reason alone it scores…
8/10
(Although I do think future issues might score much higher, well I hope they do!)
Reaper
You've managed to intrigue me enough to consider looking at it when it comes out. Thats a big thing in regards to F4 for me as I don't generally like the series.
Longshot
Similar here infact, never been interested, but this may sway me.
Web of Fear
I didn't think that this issue was all that much, but it is a launching platform.
Has Millar set expectations too high after Ultimates?

well that remains to be seen, the Ultimates certinatly set an unusually high bar.

Interesting review...
Although, let's face it, I was buying this anyway.

It appears we also have a new reviewer too... Now, I may be totally off base here... but I almost felt like I was reading one of Batmanuel's reviews...
