The Beatles - Not really very good were they?Yes thats right. They were a bit poo really!!!!
I can't see the fasination tbh.
They seem to be self perpetuating on their own hype.
Basically, cos they seem to be the 1st band to achieve a fantical following that has some how turned them in to a group everyone has to love.
People loved aspestos (sp?) in the '60's. Doesn't mean its good for you today!
People were fantical about Take That. doesn't mean they should be loved by everyone.
I suppose they did define "middle of the road" for a generation - but I'm sorry - cant see what there is to get so excited about.
And yes I have listen to them - much to Batmanuels horror - I even own a copy of Sgt Peppers LHCB. Its Ok - but it's ment to be their master peiece!!! I brought it cos everyone told me how fantastic it was.
I even have it on vinal with the "pop out" figures.
BUT ITS JUST NOT THAT GREAT!

I like the Beatles, but as someone who didn't grow up with them, it's hard to grasp how ground breaking they were at the time. I don't think that Take That is a fair comparison, given that the Beatles wrote and played their own instruments and their music has stood the test of time and is still popular today.
I was about post that's not the case with Take That, but I think they're at number one in the hit parade now. But their music isn't considered "classic" it just get trotted out a wedding discos...
Now The Rolling Stones, there's an overrated band.....

What ground did they break exactly?
The music is no different to other bands of the time - even bands prior the them (Bill Haley and the Comets for example) had a very similar sound and style.
Sure they were the first band to really believe their own press and disapear right up their own arse - but I cant see why we would want to celebrate that.
Dont get me wrong here - I am not saying they were "bad" as such, just they are so ridiculously over hyped - no where near as good as people say.
As for Take That - well, if one of the band was assainated they would end up acheiveing a similar status to the Beatles - the public love dead guys!
Look at what happened to Queen after Frddie Mercuray died. They went from being the band everyone remebered for "that bit in Waynes World" and the "Best driving albulm" type tune - to untouchable legends of rock!
Right then - best form a band and tell the lead singer to make no long term plans!!!

Yes "Across the Universe" and "Rock Around the Clock" - Practically the same song.
I will concede that The Beatles (and Queen) are overrated, but they just wrote bloody good songs that have stood the test of time.

I was talking over all style - not indervidual songs.
I am sure if any "non relesed" recordings exsist if Bill H and the Comets their will be some weird stuff on their unlike everything else! But thats why it was unreleased....
The Best known and most popular Beatles tunes -Hard days Night, Lady Madonna, LSD etc) are esentially pop tunes. Same kind of beat, same structure etc etc.

The Beatles caught the public's attention for almost a decade and enjoyed a fanatical following - I guess that can help enhance a legend, eh? Without that, they probably wouldn't have enjoyed the legendary status they have.
So what is it that The Beatles had? What defined them and made them stand out in the way that other bands of the decade couldn't?
Having been born in the 80s, I have no idea... so I guess we need someone from an older generation to enlighten us... is Batmanuel around yet...?

Yes as you will learn to your peril when i set fire to your Head and then run over it with a seventeen ton stone wheel
But really The Beatles for feks sake,
Like I said I had sisters who were into this crap and that’s about right, they were a boy band nothing more nothing less.
They did however realise that in order to survive they needed to be something more, and along came the hippy bandwagon, that will do so aboard they jumped, lets make deep and meaningful songs about drugs... Lucy in the sky with diamonds, a small child could have come up with that one, and the last true meaning to marmalade skies was the napalm over Vietnam, lets do a hippy trippy film...yellow submarine, but they were so stoned they couldn't be bothered to show up for voice overs, yes that’s not the Beatles voices on the film.
But the hippy band wagon came and went, and guess what the Beatles spit up, quickly realising that they were nothing more that a talentless bunch of pricks who jumped on the wrong train.
Ringo went on to do Thomas the Tank Engine
George went on to be sited in copyright infringement on my sweet lord.
Paul continues to create nursery rhymes (no prize to anyone who can tell me what McCartney Ditty is his most famous)
And John is famous for being shot, shame they didn't get Yoko too.
So there you have it, suffice to say,
I don’t rate the Beatles very much.

yeah the Beatles are not that good - though if you drink a lot of beer with some mates and then watch "Yellow Submarine" late in the morning it is a surprisingly good movie
And Queen though not high on my list of greats, do have at least some good songs to their name "Killer Queen" for example - and are definatly a "good" band especially in comparison to the host of complete rubbish that sells! (thinks Bob the Builder, Mr Blobby, David Hasselhoff, any boy band, etc etc)
Though if you start telling me that Alice Cooper is rubbish their might be stonger words to be said.

but as for yellow submarine being good after a few pints, well it would have to be a bloody lot of pints so many as to render one into a coma, then and only then could it be acceptable.

Hey I never said Queen were bad - just overratted.
They were more used as a comparision for what happens to a band when a lead singer dies. Suddenly you cant say a bad word about them cos everybody loves them!
While Queen are not my cup of Tea (Good God - does Brian May make his guiter whine like your misses when you've been out on the booze and spent the rent money - you kno, that irratating whine that peirces your brain and sets your teeth on edge, or is it just me!!??) they did do a coupke of ok tunes. I believe the Flash song has been mentioned...
I wouldn't describe Queen as bad - cos there are a lot of worse bands out there. But I wouldnt describe them as good. Not by a long shot.
Another thought.
How come songs that the band thought of as crap and so are not added to albulms - are then dug out of someones attic 40 years later, remastered and relesed. AND PEOPLE BUY IT!!!
lets run that again. These songs were not good enough in the '60s. But kill a band member AND THEY BECOME TOP 10 TUNES!!!
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!!!!
Has any one of these "rediscovered" tunes gone on to become a classic? Ever? Any one ever dig them out to listen to them?
No? Is that cos it's crap then?
Oh and

What? No love in this thread for Take That?!?
All I will say about The Beatles is... I agree but that could be the generational thing at work there. Still, they did well enough in the day and now we just can't seem to get rid!
Despite being a child of the 80s, it's 90s music that I grew up with... and there's nothing there really that could go down as classic... unless you consider Jarvis Cocker baring his arse at Michael Jackson on stage at the Brit Awards a classic moment from my time...

I guess the question is - what defines a classic?
I think Nirvanas "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (I know, I know another dead bloke!) will be rereleased, remixed and remembered for years to come.
It is after all the song that made a generation mosh!!!
The problem is - unless a whole new form of music is discovered, what can someone do that can be considered a classic? Its all been done before.

Oh! The pain! Agreeing with Captain Opinion!
Y'see, so far we've all expressed opinions on The Beatles and such but they have to be considered as 'classic' purely because of what they've inspired.
If The Beatles were that bad, people wouldn't still be raving about them today and even singing their songs. Look at the Live 8 event; how many big names all got together at the beginning and end to sing a bunch of Beatles songs? They could be considered as the first 'boy band' and you could then say that, without them, there would've been no Take That, Westlife etc (hm... that just makes me hate The Beatles!).
I'm not a fan but they have stood the test of time. People still talk about them; we're talking about them RIGHT NOW! The Beatles appeared to have defined a generation and, if that is indeed the case, then they must surely be recognised as 'classic', irregardless of what we think.
Queen can be used as a comparison but they're not exactly going to stand the test of time in the same way The Beatles have. Or Elvis. Even The Sex Pistols stand out more because of their attitude than Queen do for their music.
So what can be defined as classic? I call it the ability to stand the test of time; sure, we could talk about recording artists re-releasing old material but that's nothing new. Standing the test of time. Anyone agree?

The Beatles are a classic band - but thats inspite off - not because of their music!!
The Beatles proved that you did not have to be particually talented to sucseed in the music busness - you just had to have a pretty face!
Is it coinsedence that the Beatles and TV for the masses arrived at around the same time?
Lets remeber - people (girls) did not got to their concerts to listen to the music - they went there to scream!!
If you listen to news stories from the time - were people asked their favourite song? No - it was always "Whos your favourite Beatle?" and that in its self speaks volumes to me.
The Beatles showed the world that lack of outstanding talent would not nescacerly stop you being a world wide music sensation. Sure, they played their own instuments and wrote their own songs. But most of their songs use a very similar chord structure and most of the lyrics are not excatly rocket science!!!
As for why they have endured? Well two resons.
1st - they were the first British band to have this kind of reaction all around the world and that has ment people remeber them. You always remember your first...
2nd. it has become such a taboo to suggest that they are not very good that most people are too embaressed to say what they really think.
Put it this way. When was the last time you went round someones house and they were playing a Beatles album - or song even? Or rode in someones car and they were playing one? Or even had an album in their glove box?
If the Beatles were half the band everyone seems to say they were it would be happening quite a lot.
I still hear Hendrix being played. I still hear Bob Marley (and i cant stand him - regga doesn't do it for me (cant spell it either!)- but I can see his talents). I still hear the Pistols. Hell, I hear more Police songs than i do Beatles!!! Or the Jam even! And i dont think eother of them have been included in the "Greatest bands ever" list - even though both bands produced artists who were very sucseesful in their own right.
The Beatles. Classic band? Yes. Classic music? No. Not buy a long shot.
