spidey

And...

Since Civil War, I get Amazing Spider-Man, and I like it.

But what's the deal with all the other permeations (Friendly, Spectacular, whatever else there is...)

Do they all contain plot points like May being shot? Or do some of them just completely ignore massive details like that?
Web of Fear

I've always thought of Amazing Spider-Man as the "main" spidey title. As far as I am aware they generally seem to progress along without too much reference to the other titles, unless there's a cross over story such as "The Other".

That said, the aquisition of Spidey's organic web shooters did occur in in a story arc in one of the non "Amazing" titles, and that has been carried over into the other titles.

Yeah, Amazing is the 'main' Spider-Man title and, typically, that's where the main action is going to take place.

Friendly Neighbourhood is, ideally, the title that will appeal to readers of all-ages and will also skew more toward a typical Spider-Man story (whatever that is). It is set in current continuity and Peter David has taken it upon himself to continue a sub-plot from The Other (it seems likely that the school nurse, Miss Arrow, is, in fact, The Other; although it could also be that she is the former mutant, Marrow).

Sensational would appear to detail a more darker Spider-Man but, in all honesty, I've never really been able to put my finger on quite what the title is supposed to be. It's never lived up to that billing, as was first suggested when Sacasa took over. It has fallen back on fewer big-name villains (Will O'The Wisp) but also doesn't shy away from using bigger names (Doc Ock, Electro, Chameleon). It also reads like a very early 90's Spider-Man comic. Again, it's in-continuity.

Marvel have always maintained that the three titles all cover different aspects of the Spider-Man Universe. ASM covers Spidey in the mainstream MU; SSM covers the myriad villains of Spidey's; FNSM is supposed to be more light-hearted - even though Aunt May has been shot.

Am i wrong or was Friendly neighbourhood a mini series started for teh other and they didnt end it.

Where does family fit in, is it just to replace Loves Mary Jane. Or are they just silly things like adventures.

This kinda reminds me of Superman post crisis when Action was action, Superman was story driven, and adventures was personal life and friends.

Is Batman split in the same way, as i know superman titles seem to be just different stories.

hmmmm.

sounds like I'm not the only confused one.

it also sounds like marvel are kinda confused as well.

streamlining baby - it's where it's at.

Yeah it could do with being streamlined but with the amount they sell of each why would they? When it comes down to it AMazing is the one to really stick with, Sensational has been a bit crap recently (particularly the last story, I didn't even finish it) and Friendly Neighbourhood is ok but not fantastic.

I think any major changes in Spideys character will happen in Amazing, and if you're reading the current story you might just see something real soon.

No, FNSM was always intended to be an ongoing to continue beyond The Other. It just made a lot of sense, financially, to coincide the first issue of FNSM with the first chapter of The Other. That way, anyone fresh coming into the story (and buying into The Other for the sake of completion) may find the joy of yet another Spidey title on the market and continue buying beyond that story.

Incidentally, Peter David was not first choice writer. Mark Waid initially accepted the gig, with Mike Wieringo as artist, before signing an exclusive with DC shortly after. He never really commented on how he felt in leaving Spidey but PAD was appointed shortly after. To be quite honest, I was very disappointed when Waid bailed as I was really looking forward to his Spider-Man following his excellent Fantastic Four run.

Sensational is covering the return of Eddie Brock over the summer and given that Venom is in Thunderbolts and the Symbiants are slated to play a major role in Mighty Avengers later in the year, it may be worth picking that up. On the whole I tend to just read the main title for characters with multiple books.

Batman has a nice balance at the moment where the main title has Grant Morrison experimenting with crazy stuff and Detective has those fantastic one shot stories. But then DC tend to do a lot of their major developements in team books and mini-series at the moment, so I guess none of the Bat books are really "essential" in the way Amazing is.

Basically at the moment Sensational and FNS have no guts to them. They just kindda exsist because there are people who will always buy all Spider-man titles.

Amazing is starting to loose its way a bit as well - mainly because of all the Civil war tie ins that have completley derailed JMS ongoing tale.

Still - it makes for an interesting Spider-man read and if the changes JMS has introduced stick, his run will be refered to in the same breath as things like Millers Daredevil.

I like Amazing Spiderman at the moment, he wants to kill, and it makes him feel good, damm lucky for him, they locked me up in arkham for the same thing, ok so i murdered a few people (256 to be exact) but its a bit much to lock me up, i wouldn't mind but they have said that they have lost the key Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad
