I just got my old harddrive fitted inside a sexy powerfull computer, so what do I do, play Command & Conquer: Generals, I loose.

It's always nice to have a PC that isn't riddled with bugs though.

Yeeeah that is true, this is woorking pretty well with Windows 7 on it, only problem is the amount of heat it throws out :S

The amount of heat isn't my problem, its the shound. I'm sure that these things should get quieter the more advanced the tech, however this one just won't shut up, even when its in sleep mode.

See if you can single out the main noisy fan and then go to www.quietpc.com

They sell replacement fans/coolers which are all pretty quiet.

Anyone tried Windows 7 yet? and does it really run the old xp progs in xp mode, or is it just another Microsoft back-passage ejaculate like Windows Millennium and Vista.

Windows 7 is actually pretty good. I've been running it one form or another since May, it is more stable than Vista due to less crashes and feels more responsive due to the way the OS writes to the display. XP Mode is pretty handy but I think you only get that in the more expensive versions, for the most part the compatibility settings Windows 7 allows you to use will let you run most programmes from XP, I haven't found many so far that I couldn't get to work (Knights of the Old Republic and WinDVD 9).

If you have a Vista PC then I would say Windows 7 is a good choice for upgrade depending on how stable your computer is. If you're on XP it's less of an issue as XP is generally still pretty reliable.

what really pisses me off is that i didn't want to buy a PC with Vista as i saw this operating system as another dog much like Millennium.
But due to both of my machines being attacked by a very vicious virus i had to fork out, i knew vista wouldn't last and now i have to spend EVEN more on the operating system i should have got in the first place.
GRRR.

Unfortunately I think you've made an easy mistake there. Too many people buy new computers because their older one has a virus, it's extremely rare that a computer can't be saved from a virus either by a good clean or a wiping of the hard drive and reinstallation of (in your case) Windows XP. I can see why you're hacked off though, however I have been told that if you get the latest service packs for Vista it is pretty stable. Have you got those?

Yes id do have the latest service packs for Vista, the stability of my current machine isn't to bad, with one or two very annoying glitches with which i have had to boot up my XP laptop in order to get past them.

However i wouldn't mind so much if that every time i try and put load a program that has worked fine on xp it crashes and burns and i am told its not compatible.

if i had to upgrade everythig i have to work on Vista it would cost me a small fortune, just the shopping cart software i use on the website would be enough to hack me off as i would have to spend valuable time leaning to use the new one as well as a shed load of money that i cant afford.

and then there's my zen mp3 player.

good job i still have my laptop which i managed to salvage.

my tower to PC on the other hand was completly fucked, yes i could have replaced the hard drive and i really wished now that i had Crying or Very sad

But i just didn't have the time.

I am at the moment striping it down in order to prehaps do just that.
I have never striped down a PC before, but its not like i have anything to lose. maybe with a new HD and a clean install, who knows.

But thanks for the input on this one as i am thinking of going the 7 road rather than downgradeing to XP, i will let you know how i get on.

i dont think i will be doing much over the next few weeks though.

I had the Harddrive I use at the moment in an older PC and it was totally knackered, ready to throw out. Then, my mate just re-installed XP from scratch and hey presto it was back to working as brand new.

I would suggest this as it works really well, just don't do as I did and put all the same crap back onto it.

You don't need to replace the hard drive, just wipe it when you go to install XP/Windows 7. The only time you have to physical replace an HD is you get the click of death or it stops coming up in Windows
