New Avengers

The other new avengers thread was about issue 31 so i thought it was about time it had its own thread.

I just read the annual and i have missed new avengers so much. I pick up great comics each week and nothing compares to reading through a new avengers comic.

One thing that struck me this time was spider-man still in black acting like spider-man, doing things that make him well non skrully. To me there is no possiblity that he could be. Which means either he has to be written out or bendis is just going to ignore OMD. I am hoping for the later, proving to marvel that this is how spidey should be and they need a re-think.

Amazing twist at the end aswell

Annual gets a big "meh" from me. It's basically just one long fight scene and lacks a lot of the snappy dialogue that carries the other issues. Strange's power levels are totally unclear and just serve to re-enforce how ill suited the character is to this kind of story, hopefully with the events of this issue he's now going to be on vacation for a while so that not every issue revolves around Deus Ex Machina plot turns explained by just saying "it's magic".

The other thing that's really bugging me is, how many times can the Mighty Avengers have the New Avengers cornered and let them go? The selling point of the book is that it's meant to be about underground heroes, yet this issue we find out that the Might Avengers knew where the hideout was all along but just didn't bother doing anything about it. What's the point in having a cool plot device like the SHRA if you're not going to actually use it in stories?

My final concern (and this has been growing for a while) is that Bendis just doesn't seem to take Avengers seriously. I appreciate that his dialogue is really funny, but it gets to a point where the tension starts to slip away from the book because all the characters are treating the situation like it's a big joke. It goes back to something I said right at the start of the new team, there are too many comedy characters and not enough serious ones. The old New Avengers worked because characters like Spiderman and Iron Man had people like Captain America to play off. Cage's team doesn't really have a straight man that can ground the team and stop it becoming overly flippant and IMO that's hurting the book.
