magneto the movie?

Now this sounds like it actually has potential!
Reaper

Was talking about this with Sarah last night, while it might be a good film, commercial success wise I see it being very minor. Mainly because the people who are interested in seeing the history of Magneto are comic fans, everyone else isn't that interested.

Oh I think you will be suprised.

Remember its not only comic fans who helped the X-Men films gross over $1 billion.

And most people who went to see them had no idea who the X-Men were at the time of the 1st film.

Now they ALL know who Magneto is...
Reaper

I look forward to being proved wrong, as long as the pull it off properly and Goyer doesn't turn it into Blade Trinity Pt 2 then it could be a good film and hopefully successful. McKellen is more than capable of carrying the film, so he'll be watchable atleast.
waffle

I'm not sure that McKellen will be in it. It's going to focus on Magneto and Professor X when they were in their 20s, so will feature younger actors. It might have flash-forwards that involve Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart though.
Reaper

Hmm I'm heading to my opinion of it being a dodgy film then :S

And just because they all know who Magneto is now doesn't make the movie a commercial success. It's an origin story set in the past and is likely to be far more of a character piece than an actioner. It could win the critics and should break-even but it lacks the commerciability of even a Ghost Rider in my opinion.

Now a Wolverine movie... that'll do well. It won't gross X-Men numbers but it'll do well when compared to a Ghost Rider, Punisher or Daredevil. There's more commerciability there and more likely to attract younger viewers than a Magneto movie that's going to rely heavily on a backstory involving WWII.

Hang on

Magneto vs Nazis (cos lets face it that will be the over all theme. How do you make a bad guy look good? Put him next to a badder guy!)

And you think it won't have action?

It will be the mutant version of the Hanibal films (Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs etc).

Na sorry. IF they do it right it will be fantastic.
Robin The Boy Wonder

Your examples though are all 15 or 18 rated films - I would doubt they'll push that for a Magneto movie because that closes off some of the commerciability the character has.

The movie's a good idea in principle but I just can't see how it's going to attract a mass audience. X-Men movie or no X-Men movie, I just don't see it.

One of the X-Men films was a 15....
waffle

and we know that 12 certificates can get away with a hell of a lot if it's played smart.

I really think that this new Magneto film could be great, and agree that it will most probably be character-led, or at least, that'd be best.
Reaper

That would be best but a lot of character pieces don't do that well. And how many comic book character pieces do you know of? Tbh I can't really think of any, maybe Batman Begins and thats a big maybe
waffle

I know - but if it's only going to focus on Magneto and Prof X, then it shouldn't need an enormous effects budget, and if they choose unknowns for the leads, that should keep costs down to.

I think it'd be a very smart (and brave) move on Fox's part if they chose to downplay everything, and make it a more cerebral and thoughtful picture. Then, with smaller costs to cover, it won't matter if it doesn't take over the world.
Longshot

Surely if they make it about his past thats just going to piss us all off because its gonna be nothing like what we know of the character.

But if it is indeed about his struggel through the war and opression and loosing his family it would actually be quite good i guess.

I feel relativly confident about this you know.

Which is unlike me.

I must be ill.
