July 2008 Sales Figures

Well, not quite.

My usual source, The Comics Chronicle, is currently experiencing some difficulty with their website; however, they get their information from Diamond (who, in turn, also give them the oh-so-handy sales estimates for their publication). So, I decided, in the absence of any other source (including Newsarama - which is odd), I'd go to Diamond themselves this month.

One thing I should point out. Diamond use a points index scoring system that typically revolves around Batman. The reason for this is that Batman is a title that maintains a steady sales figure month-on-month. My understanding is that sales are then determined through a percentage of Batman's rating (usually 100.00; however, this has inflated slightly due to the popular Batman RIP arc).

There are therefore no sales estimates as yet and none that I can find published on the internet at this time (admittedly, I haven't that much time to look so if anyone can help here, please do). However, it may be of some interest for those who would like to see what titles are scoring where in July's Top 100.

Diamond's July Top 100 Comics

These figures, although not stated as such, are based on sales to retailers in North America.

Secret Invasion remains the highest-seller with Uncanny X-Men 500 in 2nd and Warren Ellis' Astonishing X-Men 25 in 3rd. Batman 678 (RIP) is DC's highest-selling title in 5th. Dark Horse's Buffy The Vampire Slayer 16 is the highest-selling independent, ranked 10th.

Some points I've noticed, one of which caused controvery last month ( Wink ):

Amazing Spider-Man looks set for another fall in sales figures, although there apppers to have been a slight increase with the debut of 'Kraven's First Hunt'. It'll be more interesting to see what impact 'New Ways To Die' has in August. I have some thoughts on Spider-Man but I'll save these for the appropriate thread.

Trinity is a flop. Despite numerous positive reviews, Trinity is scoring quite low, especially when compared to the hugely-successful 52 and, even, Countdown. If Trinity's decline continues at this pace, I wonder whether it can fulfil a 52-week multi-arc. The index would suggest a drop-off in the region of 10,000 copies in the space of one month!

The Invincible Iron Man also doesn't appear that invincible. An excellent first-issue launch has seen a decline ever since. As for Director of SHIELD, it'll be interesing to see how the title performs after it's re-named as War Machine: Weapon of SHIELD. Maybe Iron Man should take a leaf out of the better-performing Captain America's book (how Xeall & Bats will love me saying that).

Hopefully, I, or anyone else, can publish sales figures (actual or estimated) here at some point in the next week or so.

These are very interesting figures, and yes it is late, and no i am not intoxicated, so i may acually find myself posting in the correct place Smile
With the top ten being dominated by Marvel, a couple of DC have slipped in, and 1 licensed title, Buffy. who would have thought that the girl vampire slayer would still pull a crowd even without it being on the television, i wonder why it is that this is out selling the old Buffy even if the old Buffy comic have the Television Support? and i do mean out sell.

This really is a bizarre list, with JSA out selling X-Men
and FINAL CRISIS REQUIEM out selling AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.
Wow.... heh, sorry couldn't resist.

I was going to say That Captain America is Out Selling Spider-Man even after he is dead and isn't even in the book, but that would just have been cruel, so i wont.

Please dont hurt me, i will be good, Honest.

Mind you Old Dare Devil (one of my favorite comics, although it has to be said i am a few issues behind) is down at 59 and beaten by Ms Marvel in sales terms, although i suspect that  Secret Invasion helped it out a bit.

Its also interesting how some of these results mirror what we sell here, and how others differ so radically.

The Middle Ground seems to have become quicksand Sad

Hope this makes sense Smile
