Hancock

just come back from this and i have to say...its good, i dont want to say it but it is, will smith is...good, as was charlize theron and jason bateman was as awesome as always. i thought that peter berg did a good job as dir. what i thought was supergood was the script, it didnt treat its subject, that of superheroes as something silly, ok act 2 is a little wayward and some of the movie was very "popcorn" movie but it had the same kind of vibe as the first men in black. ok it covers things that comic book fans have been exposed to 101 times. but a good all round fun film.

Bah.... Fiddlesticks... in my day heroes were heroes, men were men, and women were women...

oh hang on.

wrong forum.

this was intended for a comics international type forum.

oh hang on? if thats the true intention shouldn't there have been a mention of Danger Men and Thunder Birds (as in female if the species)
heh, he said Birds "snicker" sounds a bit rude...

and how in hell did it get on the Internet, 80% of people from that generation dont know what the hell that keypads for, and no matter how many time the try and attach it to that old typewriter, they are buggered if they can make it out.

the other 20% have discovered freeinternetp**n, and were last heard saying, in my day a man didn't have to rely on a roadrill with a rubber bit on the end...
why? because Men were Men, thats why. and Women, well they told us what we wanted to hear.

what was we talking about? oh thats right "Handcock" (deliberate typo)
this film for me is probably the best or worst film of this kind ever, it really depends on your politics, but it has to be said,
i really cringed when i saw the trailer Crying or Very sad

Popped into our cinema and saw this yesterday.

In what seems to be another year of the SuperHero, Hancock has emerged initially as a black sheep.  The character knows that he has various powers that make him unstoppable so no need for origin story (scratch Iron Man), he is completely comfortable with his powers (Scratch Hulk) and yet he is hated by and hates the public (semi-scratch Batman).  I say initially because the entire point of the first part of the film is that Jason Batemans character is trying to PR Hancock into being Superman.  While watching the first part of the film that doesn't seem like a very worthy cause but in true movie fashion Hancock starts to play ball.... as best as he can.

Hancock is an interesting character because he really doesn't have any social skills and there's a funny/annoying few minutes with Bateman trying to teach him to say 'good job'.  This thread of the story is soon overlooked by the second act of the movie which centers more around Charlize Theron (Damn she was looking great in this movie, worth a second watch just for her.... ahem) and her relationship with Hancock.  It's also in this second act that the film does take a slight dive.

After watching the film it's easy to see that there are disjointed parts to it, some explanations just don't add up, are not thoroughly explored or the follow through from them doesn't make sense.  This becomes particularly evident in the last major battle scene.  Introduce this to the rushed nature of the film and it becomes easy to see why a lot of critics aren't in favour of the film.  The editing does seem to be the chief butcher of the film, e.g. A near intimate scene between Theron and Smith is referenced later on prompting a 'What?' from one of my friends because we don't see anything happen as it was suddenly cut into something else.  The real shame about this is that Hancock had the potential to become one of the summers more interesting films but it's marred for a lot of people due to the disjointed nature.

I personally would have gone back to the cutting room and fixed a few of these issues but you have to wonder how much pressure Peter Berg was put under to get it finished on time.

In short:

If you like Will Smith/Will Smith movies go and see it.
If you like dark humoured superhero movies, go and see it.
If you can watch the last fifteen minutes without thinking it over too much, go and see it.

6.5/10

Considering you were championing Superhero Movie after watching the trailer, this should mean Hancock will be phenomenal.

...or not.

I have to admit I thought the trailer looked quite good. I will see the movie but it will either be on DVD or Sky Movies. I have to save my cinema trips these days (that's what having children does for you) so my next cinema experience will probably be The Dark Knight.

I would be far more interested to see the original premise the film was based on... 'Tonight, She Comes'.

Although that would've made it an 18...

For something good no doubt, saw the trailer again, still made me cringe.
i think i will wait until it comes out on tele BBC, ITV, 4, 5. and that's providing their isn't a documentary about the formation of ferric oxide filmed in real time on the other side. Wink

Anyone else have visions of Bats promoting this as the Greatest Film of All Time (TM) after he's seen it...?

I do.  Smile
CatFang

I have to admit at first I didn't like the trailer at all, but the more trailers and longer clips I have seen it has grown on me.

Will still probably wait to rent it though, given all the really good stuff that is coming out at the cinema right now.

(TM)

and that stands for what?

If its Tin Man i never at anytime said that The Tin Man film would be anything other that good, i tend not to mix Hollywood with the real world Smile
it seem that just because it was Tin Man everyone expected me to hate it. but i wont lie just to try and prove a point.

If TM didn't stand for Tin Man, the please tell me what the hell it is you are referring too, and i dont care if I'm being thick, just say Laughing

But remember this, i was reading Tin Man when he was in his Mach 1 armor, and i have the comics to prove it Wink

PS
I saw the handcock trailer again tonight on the box, it still made me cringe. and just so i am absolutely sure we are taking in the same language, its the one where the big fish gets thrown at the boat, yes?
are they not supposed to show the best bits in the trailers?
Reaper

The trailer is meant to show how inept he is.  I'm guessing the TM stands for trademark.
CatFang

Actually it's a mammal  Wink

Actually it's a CGI of a mammal...
Batmanuel

TM,TinMen,cgi, mammals,Trademarks, See now i am really confused Smile
Robin The Boy Wonder

Yeah, it was trademark...

And he thinks himself clever enough to take me down on the Tony Stark thread again, does he...?  Rolling Eyes

Obviously, I shall have to teach him the error of his ways!  Very Happy

Back to Hancock...

Have to admit, after reading the review in Empire, I can't say I'm as bothered about Hancock now. It would appear the trailer doesn't suggest too much about the content of the film as it should; if anything, Empire's criticism about the film is that it devolves into a scenario just like any other super hero movie.

Which was not what I was looking for here.

If anybody who's seen it can tell me I'm wrong in Empire's assessment, please let me know; however, Empire and I tend to agree on many things about the films I watch.
