Games violence study is launched

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7034179.stm

This could be serious. If they stick to the point then i'm all for it, I hate parents that buy gta for their 5 year old child. I admit i was playing mortal kombat at the age of 7 but no one swore or had sex, to me it was just to people fighting looking awesome!

My fear is that this is going to be the beginning of a major banning of games in the UK, they did so with manhunt 2 and in possibilty correctly. The first one was on the edge the second one just pushed to far (however i cannot prove this as i never got to play it, i'll let you know when i have! Wink ). I feel that one victory for these people that protest about violent video gaming so much (genrally the aprents that bought the game in the first place) could mean problems for games we know and love.

I wanted to get peoples opinions as i indent to get involved in this somehow as this has always been a subject i have felt stongly about. Oh and also it affects my current job! Shocked

i dont think this is something to worry about all that much, and all there is to worry about is that in a world full of news worthy stuff the bbc cover this old toss, when i was younger then i am 2 day there was lots of talk of this kind of thing, and we were yet to be out of the grip of the video nasty thing. you are right that there does need to be tighter regulation and markiting on games with mature content, but at the end of the day what makes a nutter is not films or games but 100 and 1 other elements that are to complex for the news to cover in one sound bite, easyer to ban or censer then educate or take social action. i dont think the state banning games or movies becoming a trend again is to much of a fear for now but Xeall you are more then right to bring this subject up and as games players who live in a "free" state we should keep an eye on the matter.

i'm with you on your point but the whole idea is that the media is out to villafie the industry, just like that Stark bastard.

The sun had a massive section on manhunt 2 and how parents are appaled yadda yadda, channel 5 phoned my store asking for a copy of manhunt 2 and a chipped Ps2 to play it on (ironic manhunt 2 isn't out so a chipped ps2 would achieve nothing and the dutch version will not require a chip!), trying to make us out as evil peddlers of filth. You'll be glad to know i told them 'no sir and that is completly ilegal, can i have your name so i can attached it to this number from 1471 to report you to the police?'

What i'm worried about is these things never rely upon logic just reaction and uninformed (or misinformed) public outcry.

What amused me about the whole outcry against the original Manhunt and the little boys death was that no one involved in the investigation pointed a finger at the game. The Daily Mirror (being the supreme beings they are....) said that the Police were incinuating that manhunt was a factor, the police did at no point say anything to that effect, the Daily Mirror brought it up and it stuck.
The Columbine killings were also very briefly linked with Doom 2 (along with everything else the republicans could point a finger at) but come on, how likely is that Doom 2 of all games is going to tip you over the edge?
But then the media has always like to sensationalise certain games, Mortal Kombat and the 'obscene gore' and one that was particularly funny 'Nintendo killed my child'..... No dear your child died because of epilepsy, it was just coincidence that Zelda 2 had a flashy bit in it.

Having worked in a shop that sold games, I was a little infuriated to say the least that parents were buying copies of GTA Vice City for their 8 year old. Granted I don't believe that games or films make a violent person, I've been watching violent films etc since I was about 6 and I have yet to stab someone in the eye (though I wanted to). The problem as I think someone has already stated is that the public love something to outcry about and the media like a sensation that they can peddle to keep the masses from thinking about the important stuff like how we're being swindled of all our money by the government. Realistically they can ban a few games here and there but it won't stop people getting hold of it via downloading or imports and thats the way its been for a long time. The annoying thing is that they try and believe that it is a sensible and working option.
Parents need to be educated in the fact that like 18 certificate films, games shouldn't be bought for little johnny.

Agreed and btw, no one but me read this (i think) but there was the smallest of articles in the daily mail (not mirror, you are wrong there) admitting that they had misinturpreted evidence and that it was actually the victim who owned manhunt! Yes thats right the victim played the game and decided its really cool to die like the game Rolling Eyes thats why its back on the shelves

Manhunt 2 has actracted alot of attention due to the original's false slander. The BBFC got alot of stick for letting the first one through (no one apologized) and are taking the safe route with the second. i still want facts as to why. What content was so bad? or is telling me going to make me kill someone?

Yeah I know it was the Mail and seeing as I always take the piss out of Mail readers for this kind of thing, I have no idea why I put the Mirror, I apologise Sad
