Eragon

Went to see this at the Cineworld in Chichester today and was so astounded by it I had to write a review...

I think it's been mentioned on here before but I couldn't find the thread, anyway it's a film based on the book by Christopher Paolini about a young man who comes into the possession of a dragon egg, egg hatches and he and dragon are needed to fight the baddy Galbatorix.
When I say I'm astounded by this film I don't mean it in the traditional way, Eragon has astounded me by being absolutely terrible, this has to be the worst film of 2006 if not the decade and I'm not over exaggerating.

You have to give the scriptwriter and director credit for being able to make John Malkovich, Jeremy Irons and Robert Carlyle look like utterly crap actors, though I'm not sure it's the right kind of credit. The worst acting comes from the lead Edward Speleers has to be the worst actor I've seen.... Ever! Why they chose him is completely beyond me, he has less range than Steven Seagal and Keanu Reeves (refer to my posts on the Constanteeen thread for my views on him) so that really says something, this guy should go back home and work in Mcdonalds because thats all his personality can really cope with. The script for the film is beyond a joke most of the dialog is unnecessary or completely out of place, it's almost as if the scriptwriter watched the worst films he could find and read the worst books possible as his preparation. It's a bit strange as he did the script for Jurassic Park III and that wasn't too bad. The director was formally a special effects director and this shows throughout because it's below amateur quality, there were films produced in my Media studies A-Level that had better direction and continuity for that matter.

From what I'm told the film doesn't follow the book at all so much that it's nearly unrecognisable. The characters names are there and some location names but the events are mostly different and/or at the wrong times. It's interesting to watch the film to stop all the different bits from films they have taken. There are Luke and Vader type moments, Luke and Kenobi moments, LotR type moments with a healthy dose of Dragonheart. In some ways it seems Star Wars and LotR were more a basis for this film than the actual book was. Sadly it doesn't compare to those films... at all.

To paraphrase it's crap... utter utter crap and if you value your time, money, lack of boredom just don't bother.

Robin The Boy Wonder

Well, I was never gonna watch this LOTR rip-off anyway. But thanks for reaffirming that for me.

...you have been very unlucky in your choice of films lately, haven't you...?

Yeah a little, I wouldn't have gone to see it after I read the Empire review but I promised Sarah. We also saw Night at the Museum which is a lot of fun Very Happy
The Rascal King

Yeah, I've heard that it has a little bit of a Star Wars and Lord Of The Rings feel to it.
It was really that bad?
Then I'll give it a miss then.

Sarah was burying her head in my chest for the last 15 min because she couldn't watch anymore (she really liked the book and the end is sh*t) so yeah it's REALLY that bad. Buy some cheap porn instead Wink
The Rascal King

I'm fine actally, I'm watching Transformers again.
All this talk has gotten me in the mood. Smile
Gonna represent over the next while in my T Shirt.
Awww yeah.

Or I could just watch Star Wars.

Star Wars!!!! (I am biased being a Star Wars nut so may be best to ignore me but not)
Black Phoenix

yeah i watched it a while back cos a mate had read the book and liked it so off we went (against better judgment) and yup it is undeniable terrible.

the charectors have as much depth as a dried up spit puddle in the middle of the sahara desert. twas BAD.

though i left with the impression that perhaps the book could be ok - but then on reflection thought nope its proberly cheap nasty fantasy like harry potter - so left it to read some other stuff.

Jeramy Irons really needs to start reading the scripts to dragon themed movies before agreeing to do them.
Reaper

I've heard that he only apparently did this for the money and really didn't want to and wasn't interested in.
