Doctor Who X-Mas Special

Did anyone see the Doctor Who X-Mas Special? Now was that Crap or was that Crap... bloody hell i was expecting C.T. to say "do i look bothered? i am only missing my own F**king wedding you moron" at any second, (and who the hell told her she could act) and the flying Tardis!!! what was that about??? not since Docter Who visited Albert Square have i been so ashamed for the poor old Doctor, my god it was bad, i would cry if i wasn't laughing so much.
But am i bovered, do i look bovvered, well actually... Yes. Sad

I've not watched it yet but the trailers have scared me (in an acting sense...).

Catherine Tate's style of acting has always been over-acting and the trailers showed plenty of that. I still feel her appearance in the last episode of Season 2 ruined what was a brilliant episode - did we really need to see The Doctor meet the Bride just after his emotional farewell to Rose? No, not really; the emotional send-off was a perfect ending before that silly cow hammed it up for ten seconds!!! Mad

It's repeated in the early hours of Sunday morning on BBC1 and next Tuesday on BBC3, so I'll catch it then.

Yep.. sounds about right.

I had no idea who it was when she appeared at the end of that episode Neutral Don't really follow pop culture that much. And I completely forgot about the Christmas Special and it sounds like it was probably a good idea, might catch it on the re-run they're doing.
Web of Fear

Catherine Tate seemed to play ever other character she's ever played. I've read that the motivation of the producers was to send the Doctor straight into another adventure with no time think about Rose's departure. Unfortunately Tate's character was so dreadful for about 20 minutes before she finally calmed down, that while I could understand her being upset, I quickly lost any sympathy for her. On the other hand she had developed as a character by the end of the story...

I really liked the TARDIS chasing the taxi.

I think that more could have been done with the spider baddie, but she just stood there and mouthed off.

All in all, an OK episode. Roll on season three. Smile
Robin The Boy Wonder

Finally sat down to watch this Tuesday night...

Firstly, Catherine Tate wasn't that bad. Web of Fear is spot on in that she spends the first 20 minutes shrieking and performing poor rip-offs of her pre-existing characters. I really thought we'd have a 'Am I Bovvered?' moment but she calmed down, and when she finally did, things improved.

I quite enjoyed the story and the spider-thingie was, visually, really good but I would have liked to see them do more with her. This one has potential and deserves far more than to be killed off by the British Army (like they'd really fire upon a spaceship while in a built-up area; the PM would spend way too much wringing his hands worrying about what to do to make THAT decision!). So I'd like to see more Spider-Thingie.

But hands-down best moment belongs to The Doctor's killing Spider-Thingie's baby brethren when flushing water down the drain (thinking about it, this is exactly like the rhyme 'Itsy Bitsy Spider'). This is The Doctor's dark side revealed; when it comes down to it, he can be a ruthless bastard - and that's why he needs a human companion. To keep him stable; not just to keep him company. A reminder that The Doctor may just be the most dangerous being alive in the known Universe (aside from Megatron, that is).

And as for the Season Three sneak preview... was it me or was that Christoper Ecclestone in one of the clips...? Shocked

I've watched it again, and can't see him. Where do you think he appears? YouTube link below.

I liked the sudden appearance of the Bride at the end of season two. Instead of leaving the series on a downbeat note, it was something to look forward to with the completely unexpected appearance. JMO.

PS - Can you move this thread to the TV forum?

Done!

And fopr the record i dodn't think it was that bad. Just a gerneral Dr Who romp!

After all - how many of us would have been able to deal with a complicated plot on Christmas evening?!?!?

Agree about Tate being well, to Tateish - but my kids have no idea who she is and they loved it!
waffle

It was laughable bad - but not so much because of Catherine Tate. It was Sarah Parrish as the big red spider thing that really spoiled it for me. She was terrible.

Nah; I'm wrong.

I thought I saw it so I checked it out on Wikipedia after I posted the above. They gave quite an extensive overview of what was on the Season Three preview including episode titles, information about some of the episodes and a teaser on what the season arc may be about. Believe me, if Eccleston was involved, it would be all over the place by now.
Batmanuel

well i thought i saw him, and i was sober, honest.

Re-watched it and it's not Christopher Eccleston.

It's another bald-headed actor who looks a little bit like him but younger. Ah, well; never mind - I would quite like to see Eccleston back in some form or another, even if it's just for one episode.

Does anyone else agree with me that he was better than David Tennant...?
Web of Fear

I prefer David Tennant's Doctor to Christopher Ecclestone's. IMO David Tennant just seems much more comfortable in the role with the eccentricities of the character than Ecclestone ever was.

Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike him. "The Unquiet Dead" and "The Empty Child" ("Are you my mummy?") from the Ecclestone series rank as two of my favourite Who stories. Of the two actors, David Tennant has my preference.
