Dave Sims JudenhassNow we all know who Dave Simm is, and if you don't because you are a bit of a newbie, then its the guy who gave us Cerebus, Nuff said.
Here we have a preview of his latest offering, you wont see this in the shops yet, as its only been sent out with the Diamond Dateline.
Now as much as i respect Dave Simm for sending this advance copy out to retailers, and not just a preview mind, but the whole thing, and free too.
I cant help but think that one, he has shot himself in the foot, and two, he may have done more harm than good.
Let me explain.
He tells us that this is a 48 page self contained story which was created in response to a request by Peter Birkemore the owner of The Beguling Store to create something that was self contained, and that he could hand to a novice comic book reader as well as a hardcore reader, and say.. Now this is what comics are truly capable of.
Well he has failed
Why? well the subject matter to begin with, with photo realistic art we delve into ... The sixteenth Anniversary of Auschwitz, Yawn.
Now dont get me wrong, i am not belittling anything that happened there, and people how know me and know me well will realise this, the point is, that for all its factual research, and its beautiful if macabre illustrations, its just not very good.
If you must read an intense account from this period, i wholeheartedly recommend Maus by Art Spiegelman. it is just so much better.
If Dave Simm was trying to create something that was self contained, and that could given to a novice comic book reader as well as a hardcore reader, and say... this is what comics are truly capable of.
Then he sure as hell has failed, don't waste your money on this, buy Maus instead, it really is that simple.
i am not even going to rate it, its boring
PS. a copy is available for overnight loan at your friendly neighborhood comic store although to be honest, i could probably pick a random back issue which would be better, still the offers there, should you want it.
