I'm taking a leave of absence (kinda) from the boards for a while now. I will still be around (told you, kinda), and I will still post the occasional post; however, I won't be getting too involved in some of the larger debates - like the Tony Stark is 100% Pure Hero thread (otherwise called Bats & Xeall are Wrong! ) & Spider-Man is Great (otherwise called Bats & Xeall are Still Wrong! ). In other words, I'll be around, I'll be keeping an eye on you all and I'll participate where necessary without creating too much. I'll also post some more sales figures shortly (June).
Why...? Glad you asked!
Some of you may know that I've bought our family home. Well, the exchange of contracts is now imminent and even though we won't be moving in straight away (we haven't sold ours... yet, if at all), there is a lot of work to be done over the next month or so.
To make matters even more complicated, Ann will shortly be undergoing an operation to have her gall bladder removed. The operation itself involves keyhole surgery and I'll need to be there for her (before, during and after) to ensure she recovers properly - no mean feat considering we're raising a fourteen-month old.
All of this is happening at the same bloody time. And it's very, very stressful. Today was bad enough - we had a complication with the contract, we were supposed to be meeting with the bank to arrange transfer of our deposit - and Ann was told her op was this Wednesday. Ann's put the surgery off - at least until the beginning of August although nothing like that can happen with the house.
Not to mention the fact I'm involved in a full-time job and am very, very busy. Oh, and the company I work for are cutting costs and no one's job is safe. So nothing to worry about at all really.
Anyhoo, I hadn't planned on typing this post this evening (not at all, really), although when considering what I'll be doing now, I thought it best I do post so that no one wonders where I am if I disappear for any lengthy period of time.
So, I'm around... but not too much.
See you on the boards.
PS. Retiring...? You should be so lucky!

Good luck and all the best to Ann and the family.

And so ends a week of Hell - and I only wish I were joking.
Things were running smoothly until Wednesday when my solicitor returned from a couple days off. And no, she wasn't the problem; to be honest, I don't quite know what I would have done without her.
Anyway, before I get too involved, I need to point out that the seller is buying a new build. He's already paid a non-refundable cash deposit so, as far as he's concerned, there's no going back.
So, Wednesday comes. And the seller's solicitor asks that we exchange contracts with no fixed completion date. For me, that's not happening. I want a guaranteed completion date on exchange. Simple enough, eh? No, not really. The seller's solicitors then advise that the builders have downed tools and will do no further work until I exchange contracts; completion will be mid-to-late September. Again, I dig my heels in. There's no exchange without a fixed completion date; and, furthermore, if I'm to wait until the end of September, then I will only agree to buy at a reduced price. After all, the market will only have deflated further in that time.
Thursday comes. We're still no nearer to completion until... after some negotiating, the seller's solicitor informs their client that we will only complete in August (22nd is suggested). They go one step further by telling him we will force completion for that date and they must find rented accommodation in the meantime. WTF?!?
My solicitor suggested 22nd August and suggested they may need to move into rented accommodation if their new build doesn't complete in time. We certainly don't force the issue nor do we issue all of these ridiculous demands. I found the seller to be really amenable when we met him and this was the last thing I wanted to do. By the end of the day, I tell my solicitor and the estate agent, despite mounting pressure from the seller's solicitor, that I'm going to sleep on it.
Friday comes. The seller's solicitor now tells us that their offer yesterday was for 'one day only'. Today, the offer is 12th or 22nd September. They then issue an ultimatum, which means I have to choose one or the other. No further negotiation to be had. They even tell my solicitor that their client will re-market the property if I fail to agree to their terms and will not sell to me.
Eventually, my solicitor contacts the senior partner at the estate agent as a final roll of the dice. The senior partner speaks to the seller and... it would appear that his solicitor had been misinforming him. We made no demands yesterday; however, his solicitor told him that we had. Furthermore, they told him we were going to force him out on 22nd August and into rented accommodation. We said no such thing. He hadn't even threatened to pull out; he, like me, was now at the point, where he wanted to deal with me directly - or, the next best thing, through the senior partner at the estate agent.
After realising the position his solicitor had forced, I came to the conclusion that there was only one way to resolve everything. We agreed to exchange with a completion of 22nd September. No more lies or in-fighting between solicitors. No ridiculous power play; and while the date is later than I want, I do think this is for the best all around. You could say the seller's solicitor won - although they have damaged their reputation in doing so. It's bittersweet at best. Me? I lose nothing.
I also had to bear in mind that Ann really, really wants this house.
We also now have a date for the operation - Wednesday 6th August.
So... I will be around more than I had announced (for now), although not around when Ann has her op.
In other words, I rescind my retirement. And it was good to get this off my chest. Thanks for reading - I'm sure you've either skipped to the end or have fallen asleep by now (Bats ).

Wow!
See this kind of thing is why we keep putting off buying a house. Although now we can make the excuse of wisely considering the credit crunch
Glad it got sorted in the end. "If you want something done right..." as they say.

Quick update:
All still going ahead with the house (Thank God).
And... Ann's gall bladder operation tomorrow was cancelled late this afternoon. We're not happy, not least because we'd prepared for tomorrow at work, home and, of course, mentally.
Ann hasn't been sleeping the past week, I've been unwell and now we get to do it all over again for 16th September!
And that's without mentioning that it's a week before we complete the sale. AGH!!!
Xeall
sorry to hear you having troubles but unfortunately it is the way of the world, you shall remain strong im sure.
You seem to remain strong when knowing your wrong so id hate to see you right!
Batmanuel
By Now you should be well on the way to being settled, just like to say good luck.
Robin The Boy Wonder
Thanks guys!
Anyhow, quick update.
Ann's gall bladder operation has been moved to 16th September.
Completion date is still 22nd September and we should move into our new home sometime in October.
