August 2008 Sales Figures

The Comics Chronicles have recovered from their website problems and are once again posting monthly estimated sales figures based upon comics sold to North American retailers as reported by Diamond.

August 2008 Sales Figures

It would seem that comic sales in August 2008 are down 11% when compared to August 2007. This continues the gradual decline experienced since the beginning of the year, with comic sales down 7% in 2008 against 2007. Take heart though, as comic sales are still 14% higher than they were in August 2003!

Marvel's Secret Invasion remains the highest seller, with DC's Final Crisis scoring second, albeit not a close second. Dark Horse's Buffy The Vampire Slayer remains the highest selling independent at 13.

Heh. I can't resist. Sorry, Bats, but I just can't resist.

Amazing Spider-Man.  Very Happy

It would seem that, as expected, sales of Amazing Spider-Man increased with 568, the first chapter of New Ways To Die, peaking at 93,346. There was, however, a just-as-sharp decline with the very next issue (569) with sales estimated at only 77,909. This may still be higher than the month's earlier issue (567); however, I feel that (and all personal feelings for ASM aside) this does not bode well for our favourite web-slinger. More on the Spider-Man thread.

On another note. Is it me or is X-Men: Legacy just not performing to the standard of it's previous nomenclature, the 'adjectiveless' X-Men. Sales this month stood at 68,011; and while it still ranked 22nd, I can't help but feel this has the potential to sell so much more.

Oh... and I wonder how Captain America will perform after the current storyline has ended (this week). Hopefully, just as well as it has done minus Steve Rogers. After all, an exceptionally well-written comic deserves to sell well, no matter who the titular character.

Every three issues or so, or up to a maximum of one in three issues of Amazing are solicited with a one in twenty five variant cover, this could be c contributing factor to sudden sales increased and drops. i am not saying it is, i am just suggesting that many retailers who order 47 copies would raise it to 50 for that one issue in order to get an extra variant.
