Anyone still playing City of Heroes?

Fired up my account again this week. Is it just me or is the Rikti Invasion event one of the best they've ever done? I feel like I'm in a proper summer blockbuster. Cool
Reaper

I haven't played for over a year, whats the current main storyline and how is it making it a summer blockbuster?
Xeall

Haven't played for well over a year and i was Villains. I miss Gribblor.

The Rikti have return to Paragon City to mount a second invasion. At certain times (seems to be late evenings on certain days) you get an alert in the chat box stating that Rikti ships have been sighted over a city zone. You then get about 5 mins or so to head there (or escape if you'd rather) before the skys darken and drop ships begin patroling the zone. First they bomb the streets (and you have to destroy the bombs before they regen and detonate) then the main invasion force lands and a constant stream of aliens decend on the centre of the city. You basically end up with loads of heroes holding the line against wave after wave of aliens. They're statted using the scaling stats they use on giant monsters too, so their level is relative to the person they're fighting rather than set in stone. Means you can jump in with whoever you're playing rather than having to go get your main.
They've added a new zone in the old crash site too, where heroes and villains can team up together and take on the Rikti base.

Musta had 30 odd heroes in Atlas Park last night, all fighing back to back against those alien bastards! Cool
Xeall

Awesome....damn i wanna play again now.
The Rascal King

Sounds wicked.
I almost want to buy the game.
And get a new Laptop to run it properly.
Reaper

NCSoft bought out Cryptic's stake in City of Heroes! They've built a new studio dedicated to the franchise, hired the entire COH creative team and are planning on tripling the dev staff over the next year. The general gist is that Cryptic want to be able to dedicate all their resources to Marvel Online and NCSoft want to put more focus into the COH franchise to make sure it's strong enough to stand up to the coming competition. Tis a good time to be a cape. Very Happy

just started playing this last night. awesome, it really is. one of the best games ive ever played, i always thought that online gameing would be 2nd rate to offline gameing, how wrong i was.
Reaper

Maybe we should set up a Whatever comics guild
norsefire1

i think that would be awesome.

Trust me, i tried this in the past, its much better to play with strangers Sad
norsefire1

i think i see where your coming from with this thinking about it. i just was in a team with people i didnt know the mission went bad, boo hoo we had a go we failed, nevermind...doing that with people who know who the other players are...i see tears before bed time. good point. silly me for thinking it would work.
kingmouse

The custom weapons are really cool. Check out American Mole!

Reaper

Guilds between friends have worked in the past, I know plenty of people on Counter Strike and WoW who have had good guilds and not murdered each other.
Batmanuel

yeah, but you only need one know it all git on the team who tries to tell you that after playing solo and with other capable teams for twenty levels that you are playing the game all wrong, and that you should do this and that you shouldn't do that, and you should do it like this and and you should do it like that, meanwhile you are collecting debt at an alarming rate and will spend the next two weeks trying to recover from the devastating effects.

Strangely enough i don't seem to pick up much dabt these days even playing as a blaster, and i really like playing with a team who instinctively knows where and what to do next, everyone has a role, and you need to know what your role is, if not it all goes horribly wrong.
Defenders should defend
Controllers should control
Blasters shoud blast
Scappers should scap
And Tanks should tank
Simply really Smile

Woo! XP rewards increased accross the whole game. Bout flippin time!  Very Happy

Last week the Marvel MMORPG was cancelled, I'm pretty sure that was being created by Cryptic as well.  Maybe this is why they cancelled it.
Xeall

this is a very good guess and i wouldn't be suprised if marvel pulled out and cryptic just changed the name
kingmouse

Yeah, Microsoft pulled the funding for it because they basically concluded that the game wouldn't be able to compete with WoW in terms of numbers and if they couldn't be the biggest in the market then it wasn't worth trying. The Marvel lisence went along with Microsoft, so Cryptic decided to keep all the work they've done on the game so far and bought the rights to Champions (a pen and paper superhero rpg from the 80s).
Cryptic sold off it's stake in City of Heroes earlier this year and the whole CoH team moved to NCSoft as part of the sale. So even though it's the same studio making Champions, it's not the same team. Jack Emmert's still there though and he was the real soul behind CoH and the creative mind behind a lot of the story and characters, so that's good news for Champions.
I'm kinda optimisitic, the cell shaded graphics and level of customisation (you create your own nemesis!) is cool, but I'll be amazed if it makes it to the stores by 2009.
Xeall

with the warhammer MMO out that year? probably not the best idea. Which by the way has taken a big drop since the original stuff i played. Quite obvious that they had loads of ideas for dwarf and orc and none for human or chaos. still waiting on the elf stuff. Guild wars 2 is on the way though i imagine and that is the one to look out for, if anything its free! Wait isn't NCsoft behind GW?
kingmouse

I'm not sure Warhammer's such an issue for Champions, Fantasy MMO's are almost a market unto themselves so I'm not sure the two games will clash as much as you'd think. Plus while Warhammer is shooting for the stars in terms of subscriber ambitions, it looks like Cryptic are gonna do what they're best at with Champions and create a powerful niche title that just focuses on doing one thing really well.

Yeah GW is an NCSoft franchise, they really are becoming the big boys in the genre at the moment, in terms of successful games at least.
Xeall

I know a guy in NCsoft........testy testy!  Very Happy
kingmouse

Not surprised, they're UK operation is based down in Brighton (presumably because it's the only place they can walk around in their City of Heroes costumes and not look strange. Wink ), I've seen their job ads around quite a bit. They actually have some really nice internships too.
