Accent UK
contains the most disturbing zombie story ever told. and thats just in just five pages.... and there is another one hundred and sixty three to go for a measly six quid??? no really, six quid. Bargain
Not what i expected at all, and i am kind of glad about that, because what i got rocked, beutiful art, great story what more can you ask for.... cheap price maybe? this little gem is sixty pages, a prestige format Graphic Novel at £3.00. cheap at one half of the price. job done.
both of these score an impressive
9.8 / 10. (The Brits do it again)
I am looking forward to this new offering, which is probably nothing like i expect it to be

If these are anything to go by, it is glory days indeed, and i really wholeheartly recommend these little gems.

If it really is the most disturbing zombie story ever told then put that one in as well - £6 you say? - that's fine.

Sure was, ask Rascal if you don't believe me, i showed it to him in the shop.
|
The Rascal King

Seriously, that story was genius. Best Zombie story I've ever read, and condensed into 5 pages, its worth the price for that alone, never mind everything else it comes with.

And ... Thank you Rascal, this boy may be young, but he sure as hell knows whats what

Thanks for the comments on both ZOMBIES and The Wolfmen ... and for plugging this years Accent UK Anthology ROBOTS. I know exactly what 5 page strip you are aluding to .... still gives me the shivers ... the writer and artist pair up again for a ROBOTS story ... also very strong ...
Thanks again

Welcome to our forum Red, i have an unanswered email from you guys, i will get to it honest, been head down in diamond order forms, just taking a minute to answer to this post and say Hi.
I have a review in the works for both Wolfmen (which i personally think is Brilliant) and Zombies (in the works, i will send you links when they are online, in the meantime keep up the excellent work.
and to everyone else buy these books, they are cheap, but not nasty, well maybe a bit nasty, but not in a cheap way, if you catch my drift.

Thought I'd follow Dave over here and say thanks for the kind words and interest in our books.
It's tough to get noticed when you're a little outfit like we are, so any help that we receive from you guys out there can only help us, so thanks again.
Oh, and ROBOTS is gonna rock... there's some seriously good stuff in it and I think it's better than ZOMBIES.
You won't be disappointed.
BTW - this is the cover to ROBOTS, that one was an early version.
Glad you liked WOLFMEN too...
|
Batmanuel
|
Hi Andy. welcome, and its only tough to get noticed when the work is mediocre at best... Fortunately Accent UK stuff isn't, take it from one who knows the force is strong in that one, which one? that one, what that one over there? yes that one, what the one with the strange look in his cyclopean eye? YES THAT ONE!
Kaboom !!!!
you just shot him.
Yep didn't like the way he was looking at us!
so with that out of the way, i am really looking forward to Robots, i really liked Zombies, it made me laugh as well as shudder.
Wolfmen was just so well done, i have not had a single negative comment on this book from anyone i have recommended it too, everyone, and i mean everyone has come back with a thumbs up if you don't let me know when Wolfmen II comes out i shall be very cross.
so the question remains, when you sell the film rights for a shit load.
are you going to forget your humble beginnings and sell out to the booksellers?
tell you what, charge em a tenner for the new printed version with "NOW A MAJOR MOVIE" blurb on it, use thicker paper stock to give the impression of value for money, and i tell you what, they still wont have been cheated
now where was i...... oh thats right, I'm over here, and hes over there, but i have the gun
|
Andy Bloor
|
WOLFMEN II will be out next year... with so much going on (and holding down a full time job and a family) it's pretty impossible to get done this year unfortunately... I'm as keen as Dave is to see it out as soon as possible, but alas life has other plans... hope you guys understand.
I'm working hard to make sure it's better than the first one, and Dave's risen to the occasion and written a great script... all I can say is that I'll do my best to make sure it's worth the wait!
Regarding ROBOTS, it looks superb and I can't wait to see it printed and the reaction to the work inside.
There are special 'retailer incentive' issues getting printed - where some have an extra page inserted at the start of the book for sketches from your favourite artist.
Thanks again for the continued support
|
CatFang
|
OK - so now I have caught up with the rest of the civilized world and read Zombies.
Thanks for recommending Bats, you were spot on, as usual Also the book is really nicely produced.
My Favourite stories were Pariah (which was just so sad, not what I was expecting in a Zombie comic), Tom the Zom (I loved the art) and Spirit of The Apocalypse (for its ending, especially. That is exactly what people would do!)
The one that really stood out for me was "Zombies" , though, in particular the art is fantastic - so Andy if you are still about these parts and reading this - "Way to Go, Mate!". I am hoping you will be at the Accent table at the Bristol con so I can stop by and talk to you about it.
So which one are you all saying was the most chilling Zombie story ever? I would have said that was "Zombies" but I think someone mentioned it was 5 pages and "Zombies" is six.
Right - on to Wolfmen now...
|
Batmanuel
|
You know what, i am having real problems keeping these in stock.
Diamond are just not forthcoming, "out of print" they say, week after week, after week,
i cannot believe its out of print, with high profile shows coming up.
i have customers who have read Zombies waiting for Wolfmen, and i have customers who have read Wolfmen waiting on Zombies.
Although out of the two Wolfmen works for me by a mere margin.
i ordered twenty copies of Wolfmen and haven't seen one, That was weeks ago, while i had stirred enough interest, now people are yawning and saying, " sorry Manny, Wolf who??"
someone give them a slap, please

Absolutely - I agree. That is "Zombies" - but it is 6 pages I have just counted them. That is what confused me.
I read Wolfmen last night as well and really enjoyed it. Please put number 2 on my list, if you would. It looks like it is getting time for the retailers / publishers to round up the boys and pay a visit to Diamond HQ!
The art in Wolfmen was very impressive. It has something of Charlie Adlard (especially in his Savage: Taking Liberties). That means very high praise indeed as it was one of my favourite books of last year. Very expressive and atmospheric, and those werewolf designs are among the best I've ever seen. Their hair was perfect

ROBOTS is officially out, although the launch is this Saturday at Bristol, a few copies are known to be circulating. It looks superb and is without a doubt a step up from ZOMBIES. There's some great work in it, and if you guys liked ZOMBIES I think you'll dig this one too.
Batmanel - not sure about Diamond's stock, but there are copies of ZOMBIES and WOLFMEN left in AUK headquarters (Dave's house if you're having no luck with them, maybe contact Dave direct?

Ooh - I was just going to suggest asking Andy if he would do the questionnaire.
I have an idea about Indy distribution that I will email you about as well. If you like it, maybe we can make a plan?
This Diamond stranglehold is not helping creators, publishers, retailers or customers. It is not only Indies that are screwed about by Diamond either. I have seen Warren Ellis posting about it as well. Yes, technically I know Avatar is an Indy, but it's not the same is it?

Did you pick ROBOTS up?
|
CatFang

No, I didn't pick it up there, although I do want it. Two reasons:
1) Have to not let the bags get too heavy to carry so when at conventions we tend to get things we can ONLY get there, or if there is a reason like the creator is there to sign it etc.
2) Where we can buy stuff direct from Bats, here, we always do.
Bats - when I spoke to you this morning I forgot to check to say did you have one in to put in the package Debe was making. If not then hold one for us and we should be down in a few weeks.

Batmanuel - I've passed your email to Dave regarding the extra copies of Zombies and Wolfmen so he should be in touch soon.
Response to Robots was very good at Bristol, also got a few people coming up to me saying how much they enjoyed Wolfmen, which was pretty cool con sidering it's been out a whole year!
I even signed a few copies too which was quite surreal!

I am going to be illustrating a story by Chris Lynch (of Monkeys With Machine Guns fame) for the Predators book and then Cy and I are reuniting for a piece in Victoriana (and to take over the world) which comes after that.
Westerns is the topic for the next anothology out after Robots (and before Predators) - so you can see there is lots of Accent goodness planned for the future.

I'm affraid i'm still on Zombies, but I must say that it is awesome.
I ahve been reading it on the train home from work, and getting funny looks from drunk blokes beside me. The stories are quick and too the point but are really enjoyable and quite random. I enjoy the way one sketch can be about the desolate state of the post apocolyptic earth [the scent of coriander, "one"] and the next can be about zombies making it in the real world [Tom the Zom, Zombie of the great unwashed). I like the interviews and the way they break things up.
I am looking forwards to wolfmen for a more lengthy read, as I would like to follow a lot of these stories quite a bit further [tom the zom (again), Nightclub of the living dead]. But I do like the pick up and read way it works, perfect for the train.
Looking forwards to robots alot as it gives the writers a more free range I guess [zombies have to be bad, or at least coping with death].
In generall loving it so far, will say again once i'm reading robots.

Wow, this Forum really is active ... and at the forefront of Indie news .. with regards Accent UK anyway ) VICTORIANA has been announced on Whatever Comics Forum ... first. Even Colin and Andy hadn't been informed that this was a definite ... having only discussed it briefly at Bristol .. yep .. we're having to plan way in advance due to the level of interest from potential contributors ... which is the best sign that what we are doing is on the right track.
Andy has put up a few posts and is known for his art on WOLFMEN and various strips and pin-ups in the anthologies, but if you stand back and look at the total design of the books and how much they've improved from our earlier efforts .. then that's all down to Andy too ... Andy mentioned the need to clone him to get Wolfmen2 out sooner ... well ... I'm working on it ... hahahahaha .. now ... where's that old chemistry set ?
Hope you all enjoy ROBOTS as much as you have ZOMBIES and thanks again to Manny for his support .. it's a tough market these days ...and there are just so many good comics to pick up ...
Righto ... i'd better start rallying the troops on WESTERN to make sure it is out in time for Bristol next year ... Cheers all, Dave W

Well, I sent my first character concept sketches off to the writer of the story that will be my Accent UK debut next year...and he likes them!
Yay!
I was really nervous . The writer (am I allowed to say his name, Red Robot?) is such a nice guy and it is a very good story, so I did not want to disappoint him.
Maybe I will be able to get a questionnaire out of him...
It's a very different experience for me working with a writer I don't have "on site", easier in some ways but much harder in others, but the one that most artists have, I guess.
|
Andy Bloor
|
That'll be Dave then... you're right he is very good - infact Dave wrote my first story for Accent UK too - many moons ago in the 'Twelve' anthology.
As you all know Dave is the co-creator and writer of Wolfmen as well as being the editor and driving force (with Colin Mathieson) behind Accent UK.
If all goes to plan Kieron (Phonogram) Gillen will be my writer for "Western' up next... and a thoroughly nice chap he is as well.
|
CatFang
|
Ah, no, it is not Dave. I was just asking him if I was allowed to say who it is.
It is someone who has written for Accent UK before though
But, yes, Dave is very very good.
I met Kieron at the MCM Expo when I was looking at his table for a copy of Phonogram #1 for a friend who was desperate to get hold of one. It was all sold out, but he gave me his email and told me to send him my address and if he still had any copies at home he would send me one. A week or so later a copy arrived, just as promised, and for free - despite valiant attempts to give him money for it! A truly nice guy indeed.
|
Andy Bloor

Ahh - sorry misunderstood there.
Who's your writer then?
|
CatFang
|
Chris Lynch...of Monkey's with Machine Guns (and soon to be Markosia) fame
|
Andy Bloor

Yes I know of him... looking forward to reading it.
I'm lucky I get to read all the stuff before the book comes out as I put them together for print
|
CatFang
|
Yes - Cy and I met Dave and Stu at Bristol this year (before I had any idea i would be involved in an Accent book) because Harry Markos said we all had to go an show support for him at the CosPlay competition (If I'd known that was the price of accepting his offer of a drink, I may have declined ). Anyway, he sat on the end of the row and then managed to slink off part way through when no one was looking! You normally only see skills like that in the SAS
Ah yes, I am putting all the Cancertown pages together for print.
Of course I live with the writer, and I am lettering it, but I get to see how it will look as a comic before it gets sent off, and it is very satisfying.
Hope your new arrivals are well.

Thanks for the kind wishes - it's very hard work at the moment and doesn't leave much time for drawing, which is tough as I've stacks of stuff to get done... I'll find the time somehow... I hope

I apologise that my above post was, frankly, feeble. I'll try and expand a bit on what I liked.
Strong cover image, great story (together with the epilogues), liked the bold artwork and the way that the use of the grey (deliberate given the character's name?) sets the doomy tone.
One quibble was one of the two quotes on the back cover didn't make it too difficult to work out the true nature of the Wolfmen prior to the actual reveal in the story.
However, I'll be sniffing out other Accent stuff in the future.

I still chuffed people like the book, short reviews or not... kidding aside, it's great you bought it and enjoyed it, so thanks muchly.
Good point about the quote, I was just happy Andy Diggle gave me one to use, might get some new ones for book 2.
Thanks again though - appreciate you taking the time to read it, review it and more importantly, like it

Not been on the forum for a while as I've been busy pulling together the contributions we've been receiving for WESTERN, but I notice that Andy has already posted the new cover to WOLFMEN 2 ... cheers for that Andy ... believe it or not I've been busy adapting (or trying to) the TWO FACE figurine into a WOLFMEN figurine ... I've Andy to thank for that too ... an easy challenge to set but it's not proven too easy to meet ... well i thought I'd have a go and see if I could do a few of them ... kind of a joke at the next convention having them lined up .. well .. I've nearly finished one and it may be the one and only ... not sure what I think of it ... and I'm afraid to show it to Andy as the Wolfmen are his design ... hmmm ... maybe I'll post the photo here ... I'll need a few beers first though to drum up the courage ....

This reminds me of when I was little and a another child at my school had a doll that if you held it one way up had a red rising hood body, but if you turned it upside down the skirt fell inside out and turned into a grandma's nightgown and revealed a mop capped wolf!
Scary stuff.
I wonder how many psychological scars that one left.

Yep .. of course you are Nic ... blimey ... for some reason I thought the reply about the Red Riding Hood doll was from Manny (as strange as that may sound) ... I think I'm suffering from trying to do too many things at the same time ...
The pages you're producing for the WESTERN anthology are great by the way ... and all the more impressive as you've stepped in at the last minute to help us out ...
Now .. I must get back to this WOLFMEN figurine and then I can at least tick one thing off of my list ....

That is quite strange.
Now it turns out my brain works in the same way as Manny's! Is that good or bad? Is he secretly controlling my mind?
Perhaps he has found a way to reverse the workings the slave chip he had installed after I got him the Jim Starlin sketch?
Hmmm...
I'll come over for a look at the figurine at Birmingham and we will finally meet in person.
Just making up Cancertown t-shirts for the show ourselves.
