Following on from Ultimates 2, there was a lot of speculation as to what Mark Millar's & Bryan Hitch's nex project would be. Both had previously confirmed that their next project would be for Marvel before Millar's contract with the company expired.
Millar's plans to redevelop the X-Universe shifted last year during Civil War when a certain J. Michael Straczynski left Fantastic Four to focus on Thor and limited projects only. The opening on Fantastic Four presented itself and Millar was hooked.
Millar & Hitch begin what will be a minimum 12 issue run in January 2008 with Millar reportedly keen to produce more. Scheduling won't be an immediate problem as Hitch has already completed the first four issues, is preparing to work on the fifth with Millar having already fully scripted the first nine issues.
Announced at Wizard World: Chicago, here is Newsarama's interview with Millar & Hitch

They might have a few issues "in the can" but it's hard not to be a cynic about the scheduling. _________________

I'm not so sure - I think Millar & Hitch will keep to a monthly schedule, particularly if they only do the minimum 12 issues they mentioned.
With Millar, his schedule has often been hampered by his Crohn's whereas, with Hitch, it was only with Ultimates that he struggled to meet his deadlines.
I remember reading an interview earlier this year where Hitch commented that it took him only six weeks to produce the last issue of Ultimates 2; and that one of the things he did differently, was work on a larger drawing board (I can't remember the specific sizes). If he was feeling burned out with Ultimates and obsessing over even the most minor of details, then it's perhaps unsurprising that he fell behind in the manner he did.
Let's also take into account that he's already four issues in; he's given himself a lot of lead time since starting work on Fantastic Four. If he continues to work at this rate, then he should be preparing to start the ninth issue when their FF launches in January.
Maybe I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt - I really want this to work.
Of course, did anyone else notice that Millar's original plan was to revamp the X-books and write 36 issues in one year?!? Wonder how that would've turned out...
